This Seachem MultiTest kit measures key water parameters with precision using a multi-cavity plate for simultaneous testing, for marine and freshwater tanks.
Natural sea water contains about 10 mg/L as silicate. In reef or other marine aquaria, silicate should be 1 mg/L or less. Silicate is non-toxic to fish and invertebrates, but is ideally kept below 1 mg/L to minimize diatomaceous algae. In freshwater, silicate is not critical. Usually, freshwater silicate concentrations will range in the area of 4 to 20 mg/L.
MultiTest Silicate measures silicates to less than 0.5 mg/L in marine or freshwater. This kit measures soluble silicate and reports it as silicate concentration. To convert to silicon, multiply by 0.3. It performs over 75 tests and contains a reference sample for validation.
What it is. Seachem’s own description: a test kit that measures silicate to less than 0.5 mg/L in marine or freshwater aquaria, used to keep an eye on the diatom-algae-promoting parameter.
Where this sits in the Seachem range. One of the individual parameters in Seachem’s modular MultiTest line, the same silicate test is also bundled into MultiTest: Reef Special alongside phosphate and iodine/iodide.
Why it matters. Seachem notes silicate is non-toxic to fish and invertebrates, but reef and marine keepers still want it at 1 mg/L or less to minimize diatom algae.
Test count. Over 75 tests per kit, per Seachem.
Measurement range. 0 to 25 mg/L silicate, with the color chart resolving changes in 0.1 to 1 mg/L increments at the low end and 0.01 to 0.1 mg/L increments at the very low end.
Unit note. The kit measures and reports soluble silicate as silicate concentration; to convert the reading to silicon, multiply by 0.3.
Four silicate reagents, a reference sample for validation, a stir rod, a low-range cuvette, a sample pipette, the sliding color chart, the six-cavity opaque white test plate, and instructions.
