What Is Substrate?
Substrate is the material lining the bottom of a tank — gravel and sand are the inert options, while aquasoil is a nutrient-rich, often clay-based substrate designed specifically to feed rooted plants directly and, in many products, gently soften and acidify the water above it.
Why the Choice Matters
Inert substrates (gravel, sand) look clean and are low-maintenance but supply plants with essentially nothing, pushing root-feeding entirely onto root tabs and liquid fertilizers. Aquasoil actively feeds plants from below for months, which is why most high-tech planted tanks use it, but it typically leaches ammonia during the first 1–2 weeks (fine for a fishless cycle, risky for fish added too early) and breaks down and compacts over 1–3 years depending on the product, eventually needing replacement.
