Why it needs cleaning. The ceramic disc’s job is to break CO2 into a fine mist as it passes through — algae and mineral buildup clog its pores over time, and the disc visibly browning or greening is the cue to clean it, rather than a fixed schedule.
How Fluval cleans its own diffusers. Per Fluval’s own care demonstration for this diffuser, remove it from the tank and soak the ceramic disc in a 50/50 bleach-and-water solution for 5–10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and soak briefly in dechlorinated water before returning it to the tank — bleach residue left on the disc is toxic to fish if it isn’t fully rinsed and neutralized first.
No need to disassemble. The whole unit can go into the cleaning solution without taking it apart first.
