What Is Live Rock?

Live rock is porous calcium-carbonate rock — originally reef rubble, now more commonly “dry” quarried rock seeded with bacteria — used as the structural and biological foundation of a marine or reef aquarium. Its porous structure hosts huge colonies of beneficial bacteria that handle biological filtration, on top of giving corals and fish a natural-looking structure to live on and around.

Why Live Rock Matters

Because so much of a reef tank’s biological filtration happens inside the rock itself rather than in a separate filter, the amount and quality of live rock directly affects how stable the tank’s nitrogen cycle is. Modern “dry live rock” ships without pests or die-off smell and gets seeded with bacteria over the first few weeks in the tank, which is why it’s largely replaced wild-harvested live rock — it does the same long-term job with none of the shipping die-off risk.
