What Is the Nitrogen Cycle?
The nitrogen cycle is the biological process that makes an aquarium safe to hold fish. Fish waste and uneaten food break down into ammonia, which is highly toxic even in small amounts. Beneficial bacteria that colonize the tank’s filter media and surfaces convert that ammonia into nitrite — also toxic — and a second group of bacteria converts nitrite into nitrate, which is far less harmful and is removed through regular water changes.
Why Cycling Matters
A brand-new aquarium has none of these bacteria established yet, which is why adding a full stock of fish on day one is the single most common beginner mistake — it causes an ammonia and nitrite spike (“new tank syndrome”) that can kill fish outright or leave survivors permanently stressed. Cycling a tank means running it, usually with an ammonia source and no fish (or a very light, gradual stocking approach), until ammonia and nitrite both test at zero and nitrate is being produced — typically 2 to 6 weeks, though bacterial starter products can shorten this considerably.
Once established, this bacterial colony lives mainly in the filter media, which is why filter media should never be fully replaced or rinsed under tap water — both actions can wipe out the cycle and restart the whole process.
