Compatibility

What it is. The genuine Fluval replacement impeller assembly for the AquaClear 70 Power Filter — item 4 in Fluval’s own AC-series parts diagram, listed there as part number A16008 for the AC70 specifically. The AC20, AC30 and AC50 each take their own impeller assembly under a different part number in the same table (A16005 / A16006 / A16007) — this one is sized for the AC70 and isn’t interchangeable with the smaller units.

What it isn’t. A separate part from the “Impeller Cover” (item 8 on the same diagram) — the cover is the housing the impeller sits inside; this listing is the impeller and shaft assembly itself.

Setup & Use

Why it wears. Per Fluval’s own FAQ, the impeller is the filter’s only moving part, running continuously for as long as the filter is plugged in — so it eventually wears, and for that specific reason it’s excluded from the AquaClear’s warranty, unlike the rest of the unit.

Signs it needs replacing. Fluval’s troubleshooting guide points to a noisy motor or reduced water flow out of the filter as signs the impeller assembly needs cleaning or, if cleaning doesn’t fix it, replacing.

Fitting it. Per the manual’s motor maintenance steps: unplug the filter, twist the motor unit a quarter-turn in the direction marked on its front and ease it down, pull the old impeller out of the impeller well, fit the new one in its place, then reinstall the motor.
