The API Ammonia Test Kit measures ammonia in fresh and saltwater aquariums to help prevent fish loss.
Measures ammonia to help prevent fish loss Benefits:
Follow API Easy Care Guide and use the AMMONIA TEST KIT:
Taking a few minutes each week to maintain and monitor aquarium conditions is the key to a healthy aquarium.Tropical fish continually release ammonia into the aquarium through their gills, urine and solid waste. Uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to the water. Even small amounts of ammonia stress fish; large amounts of ammonia will kill fish. Ammonia is the number one killer of tropical fish. The API AMMONIA TEST KIT is mercury-free, salicylate test for fresh and saltwater fish. The AMMONIA TEST KIT tests ammonia levels from 0 to 8 ppm.
API’s published method, step by step:
How often: API’s guidance is several times a week for the
first four to six weeks of a new aquarium, then weekly for monitoring, and
whenever something looks wrong.
Three things API answer directly, because they get asked:
the #2 bottle’s drops look bigger than #1’s — the dropper tips are
identical, the liquid is just more viscous, so the kit is not faulty. Rinse
the tube immediately after reading, or the reagents stain the glass over time.
And shake the reagent bottles hard, but be gentle with the
tube: inverting it back and forth every one to two seconds for the
stated time is all the mixing it needs.
We do not have a number for this, and we are not going to invent
one. API list this kit in a single pack size — “1 CT” —
and publish neither the reagent bottle volumes nor a test count anywhere on
their product page. The two documents they do publish for it are both safety
data sheets, not the leaflet.
What we can tell you is what governs it: each test consumes
16 drops, eight from bottle #1 and eight from bottle #2, so
the kit runs out when the smaller of the two bottles does. Held vertically as
API instruct, drop size is consistent, which is why the count on the carton is
meaningful at all.
If the number matters to your buying decision, message us and we will read
it off the carton in stock rather than quote you a figure from a competitor’s
listing.
API’s own contents list for this kit:
The kit reads 0 to 8 ppm and works in both fresh and salt
water. It is a mercury-free salicylate test.
Nothing else is included — no second tube, no rack, no treatment. If
you are cycling a new tank you will want an ammonia treatment alongside
it.
