Benereef is not just a coral food, it is engineered whole-tank food. Scientifically formulated with a mixture of vitamins, marine proteins, and our patent-pending pre-and-probiotic formula to maximize bioavailability and absorption like no other product in the market.
Benereef has been designed to have a minimal adverse nutrient impact on a system due to the 3-3000 particulate micron size, quality and abundance of proteins, and taste-good factor enables even the tiniest of mouths an opportunity to feast resulting in healthier microflora and fauna to help avoid some uglies.
After 3-4 weeks of continuous use, there will be a noticeable increase in coral growth, coloration, polyp extension, and feeding response. Before long corals will be happier, healthier, and plumper.
Total Microorganisms
Lactobacillus, Saccharomyces, and Bacillus species.
The Benepets Benereef Reef Food 40 gm is formulated to feed corals without overloading the nitrifying bacteria that keep your reef's water quality stable — see our guide to the Nitrogen Cycle.
Composition & Analysis
Guaranteed analysis, as published by Benepets:
Crude protein 25.5% minimum
Crude fibre 44% maximum
Moisture 5.5% maximum
Crude ash 5.0% maximum
Crude fat 4.7% minimum
Total microorganisms — Lactobacillus, Saccharomyces and Bacillus species — minimum 1,000,000 CFU/g
Ingredients: salmon fish meal, freeze-dried plankton, brine shrimp, rotifers, copepods, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Zea mays amylacea, calcium powder, astaxanthin, Arthrospira platensis (spirulina), garlic powder, marine fish oil, Glycine max (soy), a blend of natural superfoods, and Benepets' proprietary prebiotic and probiotic blend including but not limited to Lactobacillus, Saccharomyces and Bacillus species.
Read that analysis carefully, because it does not look like a coral food. Twenty-five per cent protein and 44% fibre is roughly the inverse of a concentrated coral powder, which typically runs 50–60% protein and single-figure fibre. That is deliberate and it is the point of the product. Benepets are not selling you the most protein per gram — they are selling a whole-tank food where a large part of the material is there to feed the microbiome and the nitrifying bacteria rather than to be absorbed by a coral. It is why they say it feeds the bacteria without clouding the tank and is designed not to overload nutrients. If you compare it gram-for-gram against a high-protein coral powder on the protein line alone, you are comparing two products that are trying to do different things.
The probiotic count is the active number. A minimum of one million colony-forming units per gram of live Lactobacillus, Saccharomyces and Bacillus. This is the part that requires the rehydration step in the feeding instructions — the wait is what lets the prebiotics and probiotics take up water before they go in.
Particle size: 3 to 3,000 microns. Three orders of magnitude in one jar, which is what lets the same feed reach an SPS polyp and a hungry wrasse. It also explains the astaxanthin and the garlic powder in the list: colour and palatability, aimed at the fish as much as the corals.
Note for anyone avoiding fish products: this contains salmon fish meal, marine fish oil, brine shrimp, rotifers and copepods. It is not a vegetarian food.
Feeding Guide
Start at 2 to 3 times a week. That is Benepets' own advice, and their reasoning is that no two systems are the same. After a few weeks of watching your parameters you can slowly increase the frequency. Benepets note that visible results can take up to 30 days and that the noticeable change in growth, colour and polyp extension comes after three to six weeks of continuous use — this is not a food you judge after two feeds.
Every dose has to be mixed and left to stand. Benepets are emphatic that the wait is critical, because it is what rehydrates the prebiotics and probiotics. Mix the powder into the stated volume of tank water, stir, and leave it for the stated time before it goes in.
Spot feeding — Benepets' table. Mix with tank water, stir, wait, then target-feed:
25 gal / 95 L — ½ tsp with 7.5 ml, wait 3 min
50 gal / 190 L — 1 tsp with 15 ml, wait 3 min
100 gal / 380 L — 2 tsp with 30 ml, wait 4 min
125 gal / 475 L — 2½ tsp with 37.5 ml, wait 4 min
150 gal / 570 L — 3 tsp with 45 ml, wait 4 min
175 gal / 660 L — 3½ tsp with 52.5 ml, wait 4 min
200 gal / 760 L — 4 tsp with 60 ml, wait 5 min
300 gal / 1,135 L — 6 tsp with 90 ml, wait 5 min
600 gal / 2,270 L — 12 tsp with 180 ml, wait 5 min
Broadcast feeding — same powder, more water. The quantity of BeneReef and the waiting time are identical; only the volume of tank water changes, because a broadcast mix needs to be thinner to disperse:
25 gal / 95 L — ½ tsp with 15 ml, wait 3 min
50 gal / 190 L — 1 tsp with 30 ml, wait 3 min
100 gal / 380 L — 2 tsp with 45 ml, wait 4 min
125 gal / 475 L — 2½ tsp with 52 ml, wait 4 min
150 gal / 570 L — 3 tsp with 60 ml, wait 4 min
175 gal / 660 L — 3½ tsp with 68 ml, wait 4 min
200 gal / 760 L — 4 tsp with 75 ml, wait 5 min
300 gal / 1,135 L — 6 tsp with 105 ml, wait 5 min
600 gal / 2,270 L — 12 tsp with 295 ml, wait 5 min
The third way to use it: Benepets suggest adding the rehydrated mixture to frozen food. On a tank where you already thaw a cube every evening, that is the least disruptive way to work it into the routine.
What to look for. Feeding response and polyp extension within a few minutes of feeding. Because BeneReef is formulated not to cloud the water, you should not see a haze — if you do, you have overdosed or under-mixed.
Turn the skimmer off for the feed. That is our advice rather than Benepets', and it applies to any particulate coral food: a skimmer running through a broadcast feed removes a meaningful share of what you just paid for. Ten to fifteen minutes off is enough.
