LifeRock Shelf is the perfect way to create a stable base for your rock structures. You can stack pieces up to design caves, or even build up backwalls with its unique flat side, and the flatter surface is perfect for mounting many encrusting corals. We’ve found that a mixture of Shelf rock and other types of LifeRock such as the Arches or Shapes is a great way to create interesting, beautiful aquascapes that instantly look established and natural.

Every LifeRock from CaribSea has an artificial coating and texture that mimics natural coralline algae after being in the ocean for years. LifeRock is infused with spored bacteria to aid in biological performance, along with millions of micro and macro passageways. CaribSea LifeRock is made of an aragonitic base rock, instead of the typical cement used by many other artificial rock creators. Every rock contains a network of micro and macro pores that intertwine within the rocks internal structure creating the perfect environment for natural nitrifying bacteria. LifeRock is manmade and does not affect our natural resources, making it the perfect option for all marine fish, invertebrates, and corals.

Note: Depending on the animals that you have in your aquarium, they may pick at the coating on the rocks which will not harm them at all, and over time live coralline algae will cover any spots on the rocks that may have had the coating picked off.

How much rock do I need?

Knowing exactly how much Dry Live Rock you will need can be one of the hardest questions to answer since every tank and rock will be slightly different. A general guideline for dry Live Rock, we suggest 1 pound of rock per gallon of display tank volume and may vary depending on your overall goal for the aquascape. We always recommend purchasing a little extra dry rock to ensure that you will have enough to complete the aquascape you are looking for, any extra rock can always be broken up and placed in your refugium, overflows, and sump for added filtration.

Shipping: All rock can be fragile. Indiefur makes every effort to securely pack any type of rock. However, we have no control how courier handles it and it may break during shipping. Unfortunately, this is not covered by insurance so we are unable to replace broken pieces.

Setup & Use

No curing. A rinse, and in it goes. This is CaribSea’s
own instruction, and it is the whole of it: LifeRock does not need curing,
and they suggest rinsing it lightly in clean fresh or salt water to take off
loose particles before placing it in the aquarium. There is no soak, no
bucket, no weeks of ammonia to burn off — the material is a clean
mined rock, not cured cement, and it arrives with nothing on it that has to
die back first.

Marine, reef or African cichlid tanks only. This is the
line to read twice before buying. LifeRock is aragonite, and CaribSea state
plainly that it will raise pH and alkalinity. It is not a
freshwater rock. In a planted or soft-water community tank it will push the
water the wrong way and keep pushing.

Put the rock in before the pumps go on. CaribSea’s
sequence for a new tank is substrate first, then water, then rock and
décor, and only then start the pumps and filters. Expect the water to
begin clearing within hours and to be clear in 24 to 48 hours.

Then go slowly. CaribSea’s own stocking advice for a new
aquarium: once the tank has cleared, no more than one inch of fish per
20 gallons for the first two weeks, and no more than one inch of fish
per 5 gallons after that. Invertebrates can go in once you can see the
back of the tank. The bacteria in this rock are a head start, not a
substitute for a cycle — CaribSea claim it dramatically shortens
cycling time and they do not claim it removes it. Test for ammonia and
nitrite before you stock, whatever the rock is doing.

About the coating. It is not paint. CaribSea use a
breathable coating specifically so the porosity of the rock underneath stays
open, which is the point of the material — roughly half of it is void
space, and that void space is where the bacteria live. Fish and
invertebrates may pick at the coating. It does no harm to them, and over
time real coralline algae grows over any bare patches.

Shelf is the piece you build with, not the piece you build
on top of. The box holds typically five or six pieces ranging from
8 to 14 inches, and the flat face is the whole point of the shape: it
stacks flat on flat to make caves and ledges, it sits against the back glass
to build up a wall, and it gives encrusting corals a plane to spread across
rather than a curve to fall off.

Sort before you stack. Lay all five or six pieces out
dry, outside the tank, and find the two that sit flattest together. A shelf
scape that is stable dry on a table is stable wet in a tank; one that rocks
on the table will rock in the tank, with more weight on it.

On how much rock to buy. The one-pound-per-gallon figure
in the copy above is the hobby’s general rule of thumb, not a CaribSea
specification — they publish pounds-per-gallon guidance for their
sands and substrates and none for LifeRock. Treat it as a starting estimate.
Rock left over is not wasted: broken down, it goes into a sump, refugium or
overflow and keeps working as biological media there.

What CaribSea do not tell you, and neither will we. They
publish no method for fixing these pieces to one another. Their interlocking
ranges — Create-A-Scape, Reef Forest, Reef Tree — ship with rods
and spacers and are designed to stack without glue, and CaribSea say so; for
loose shelf pieces they recommend nothing at all. Build the scape so it
stands on its own weight, and give it a firm push before you fill.

Freshness & Storage

Every batch we dispatch carries a minimum of 6 months’ remaining shelf life. Store this product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap or inner foil closed tightly after each use.

Filter media and substrates carry no manufacturing or expiry date — their working life begins on first contact with water, not on the shelf.

Returns & Replacement

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery, provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Manufacturer-sealed items cannot be returned once the seal is broken, and sale-priced items are not refundable.

If your item arrives defective or damaged, message us on WhatsApp with your order number, or email us if you would rather, and we will replace it. Approved replacements are delivered within 3 to 5 business days. Transit damage is covered by insurance on every shipment. If tracking shows delivered but nothing reached you, tell us within 72 hours, which is the reporting window Indian couriers allow. Damage caused during installation or use is not covered; replacement spares for such cases are chargeable.
