CaribSea’s Special Grade Arag-Alive! Reef Sand offers a natural look and the perfect particle size for maintaining a thriving reef aquarium. Its special grade formula is designed to reduce detritus buildup and promote efficient water flow, ensuring optimal conditions for coral and invertebrate health. This reef sand is not just aesthetically pleasing; it’s functional, fostering an environment where beneficial bacteria can flourish, contributing to a natural filtration system that keeps your tank clean and balanced.

Live sand is a great choice for new reef tank setups as it clears quickly and contain millions of live bacteria, speeding up your tank’s cycle.

Specifications

  • Material: aragonite, wet-packed with live nitrifying bacteria
  • Grain size: 1.0–2.0 mm
  • Bulk density: approximately 85 lb per cubic foot
  • Pack: 20 lb (approximately 9.1 kg) bag
  • Buffering: holds pH toward 8.2

Special Grade is the coarser of the two common reef grades. Against the 0.5–1.5 mm Fiji Pink it resists blowing around under strong flow, which makes it the safer choice under powerheads and in an SPS tank; it is less suited to sand-sifting gobies, which prefer a finer grain.

Setup & Use

Do not rinse it. Rinsing washes away both the live bacteria you are paying for and the fine aragonite that does the buffering. Pour it straight in.

Spread it across the base of an empty tank, stand a plate or shallow bowl on top, and fill slowly onto that so the bed is not disturbed. Some cloudiness is normal and clears within a few hours to a day once filtration is running.

Live rock and most invertebrates can go in straight away. Add fish gradually across the first three weeks so the bacterial population keeps pace with the load.

Freshness & Storage

Every batch we dispatch carries a minimum of 6 months’ remaining shelf life. Store this product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap or inner foil closed tightly after each use.

Filter media and substrates carry no manufacturing or expiry date — their working life begins on first contact with water, not on the shelf.

Returns & Replacement

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery, provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Manufacturer-sealed items cannot be returned once the seal is broken, and sale-priced items are not refundable.

If your item arrives defective or damaged, message us on WhatsApp with your order number — or email us, if you would rather — and we will replace it. Approved replacements are delivered within 3 to 5 business days. Transit damage is covered by insurance on every shipment. If tracking shows delivered but nothing reached you, tell us within 72 hours, which is the reporting window Indian couriers allow. Damage caused during installation or use is not covered; replacement spares for such cases are chargeable.
