Composition & Analysis

What DiscusX put in it. Marine proteins, plant proteins,
plant starches, marine oils, minerals, amino acids, lecithin, vitamins,
yeasts, plant oils, preservatives and antioxidants. Marine protein leads the
list, which is what you would expect of a grow-out pellet rather than a
maintenance food.

The figures DiscusX publish for this grade:

  • Crude protein — 53% minimum
  • Crude oils and fats — 12%
  • Crude fibre — 1%
  • Calcium — 1.5%
  • Phosphorus — 1.3%
  • DHA — 19 mg/g
  • EPA — 10 mg/g

Physical form. A 0.5 to 0.8 mm
pellet, sinking, and made to hold together in water rather than break up
— which is the difference between food the fish eat and food the filter
eats. This listing is the 90 g tin, DiscusX item number
DXGX1 90g.

On the name. DiscusX now sell this grade as
Pro Transition; GrowX1 is the earlier name for the same 0.5
to 0.8 mm post-weaning pellet, and both names appear on their published
pack list. If the tin you receive says Pro Transition, it is this product.

What is not published, and where the numbers came from.
There is no moisture or ash figure, no percentage breakdown of the ingredient
list, no naming of the vitamins, minerals, preservatives or antioxidants, and
no shelf life for an unopened tin. The figures above are the ones DiscusX
publish for the pack itself — there is no manufacturer datasheet we can
point you at. If the tin in your hands prints different numbers, the tin is
the authority, and we would like to hear about it.

Feeding Guide

Who this grade is for. Fish of about
4 to 6 cm — the transition stage, once they are
past fry food and not yet on a nursing pellet. Discus first, but it suits any
small omnivorous or carnivorous community fish at the same size. DiscusX make
finer and coarser grades of the same pellet either side of this one; match the
pellet to the mouth, not to the species.

How much, how often. DiscusX’s instruction is to feed
the amount your fish can finish in about three minutes, four times a
day
. Four small feeds is the point of a grow-out schedule: it is what
gets protein into a growing fish without leaving a bottom full of uneaten
pellets between meals.

Go by the tin for the chart. DiscusX print a feeding chart
by life stage on the packaging and publish it nowhere else, so if the tin you
receive carries one, that chart is more specific than anything we can put on
this page.

Feeding a sinking pellet. It sinks slowly and holds
together, so feed a pinch at a time and let the fish take it on the way down
rather than tipping in a day’s worth at once. What reaches the substrate
uneaten is what fouls the water.

Four feeds a day is a real load on the tank. A grow-out
tank on this schedule produces waste faster than a display tank does, and the
usual answer is more frequent, larger water changes rather than a bigger
filter — see our guide to
water changes for
how to work out the volume.

What DiscusX do not give. A weight per fish or per tank, a
soaking instruction, and any schedule for moving a batch of fish from the
finer grade onto this one or from this one onto the next. Those are judgement
calls on the fish in front of you, and we have not invented numbers for
them.

Freshness & Storage

Every batch we dispatch carries a minimum of 6 months’ remaining shelf life. Store this product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap or inner foil closed tightly after each use.
