Specifications

Fluval item #A20236, UPC 015561302364. Ribbed hosing for the FX2, FX4 and FX6 canister filters.

Fluval publish no length or bore for this spare, which is unusual for them — both of the 07 Series hoses carry their length and diameter in the product name. What their FX manual does say is that the hosing supplied with a new FX is 13.1 ft / 4 m long. We would rather tell you that than guess at a figure for the replacement pack; ask us and we will measure one.

Setup & Use

Fluval’s length limits for an FX are firm. The intake run must not exceed 6.5 ft / 2 m, and the intake and outlet lengths combined must not exceed 16.4 ft / 5 m. Hosing must follow a straight path from the filter to the aquarium rim with no slack and no loops, and the filter must never be installed above the water level.

Check and clean it every six months. That is Fluval’s interval for ribbed hosing on the FX maintenance chart — half as often as the 07 Series, because the bore is wider.

Why Fluval make a point of the ribbed profile. Their published claim, from third-party testing they commissioned: standard PVC hosing lost 36% of its flow rate after four months of operation, while Fluval ribbed hosing lost 1% after seven years. They also claim it does not kink or collapse, is not affected by temperature, and holds a constant flow area over the aquarium rim.

Close the valves, unplug, then drain. Before any part of a canister filter comes off, Fluval’s sequence is: turn the IN and OUT valves to the closed (horizontal) position, unplug the pump, then disconnect. The canister sits below the tank and is full of water — opening it in the wrong order empties it onto the floor, and on an FX4 or FX6 that is fourteen to twenty litres.

Safety & Precautions

Close the valves, unplug, then drain. The canister sits below the tank and is full of water — opening it in the wrong order empties it onto the floor, and on an FX4 or FX6 that is fourteen to twenty litres.

Unplug everything in the tank before your hands go in the water. That is Fluval’s own instruction and it covers every appliance in the aquarium, not just this one. Grasp the plug and pull it; never yank the cord.

A spare is only as safe as the unit it goes into. Fluval’s standing instructions still apply to the filter itself: the power cord cannot be replaced or cut, a unit that has been dropped or shows abnormal leakage should not be put back into service, and repairs go to an authorised service facility rather than a kitchen table.

What’s in the Box

Ribbed hosing, supplied as a length to cut down. Fluval do not itemise the pack beyond the hose itself — there are no valves, connectors or clips in it. The AquaStop valve (A20216) is a separate part.
