Fluval U4 Underwater Filter

Compatibility

Up to 65 US Gal / 240 L. Fluval’s rating for the U4 (item #A480, UPC 015561104807), the largest in the range. Pump output 260 US GPH / 1,000 LPH, 10 W at 230–240 V / 50 Hz, and 33 × 10 × 11 cm. Made in Italy, and rated for freshwater, saltwater and reptile environments.

A note on Fluval’s own page. The feature list on the U4 product page reads “up to 65 US Gal / 110 L”, which cannot both be true — 65 US gallons is 240 litres. Fluval’s specification table gives 240 L, and that is the figure we have used here.

The consumables that fit a U4, by Fluval item number: filter foam pad A488 (2 pcs), poly/carbon cartridge A492 (2 pcs), Clearmax cartridge A483 (2 pcs), BIOMAX 170 g A495 (shared with the U2 and U3) and the Clean & Clear cartridge A499.

Safety & Precautions

This one lives in the tank, and must stay fully submerged. Fluval are specific: the filter pump must be immersed in water completely, must never operate outside water, and must not be run dry.

Unplug everything in the tank before your hands go in the water. That is Fluval’s own instruction and it covers every appliance in the aquarium, not just this one. Grasp the plug and pull it; never yank the cord.

Indoor, ornamental aquariums only, and never above 35 °C. Fluval’s rating covers household ornamental aquariums up to 35 °C water temperature. Not for ponds, pools, bathrooms or drinkable liquids, and not to be stored anywhere it will meet weather or freezing temperatures.

Arrange a drip loop. Fluval ask you to position the appliance to one side of a wall socket and leave a loop of cable hanging below the socket, so water running down the cord drips off before it reaches the outlet. If the plug or socket does get wet, do not pull the plug — kill the circuit at the breaker first, then unplug and inspect.

The power cord cannot be replaced. Fluval state this plainly: if the cord is damaged the appliance must be discarded, and the cord must never be cut. There is no repair for it, here or anywhere. The same goes for a unit that has been dropped, is malfunctioning, or shows abnormal leakage — Fluval’s instruction is to stop using it rather than open it up.

Do not attempt repairs yourself. Fluval’s instruction is to return the appliance to an authorised service facility or discard it. If it falls into the water, do not reach for it — unplug at the wall first. If it leaks or trips an RCD, disconnect it from the mains.

Fluval’s note on children: the appliance may be used by children aged 8 and above, and by people with reduced physical, sensory or mental capability, only under supervision or instruction. Children are not to play with it, and cleaning and user maintenance are not to be done by children unsupervised.

Never clean the media in tap water. Fluval’s own warning: tap water kills the beneficial bacteria, soap and detergents harm aquatic life, and replacing all the media at once loses the colony. Rinse foams and cartridges in water taken out during a partial water change.

Fluval’s schedule for the U Series. Every week: take out the foams, poly-carbon cartridges and BIOMAX and rinse them in water removed from the aquarium during a partial water change. Every month: unplug, lift the filter out, squeeze the blue tabs to release the motor from the base, pull the impeller fan out of its well, rinse the impeller and its cylindrical magnet in clean water, clean the well with a small brush or cotton bud, and reassemble in reverse. Fluval also ask you to replace one poly-carbon cartridge monthly and to redose a bacterial supplement after each service.

Warranty & Support

This product carries a 3-year manufacturer warranty from the date of purchase against defects in material and workmanship, which Fluval extends to 5 years free of charge if you register the product.

Warranty support is handled by us directly. Message our WhatsApp support with your order number and we will diagnose the fault first. Most cases are solved by replacing a single part, so you rarely need to send the whole unit. If the item does need to come back, it ships to our Delhi or Pune warehouse, whichever one served your order, and courier cost in both directions is borne by the customer. Your GST invoice is valid proof of purchase for the claim.

Returns & Replacement

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery, provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Manufacturer-sealed items cannot be returned once the seal is broken, and sale-priced items are not refundable.

If your item arrives defective or damaged, message us on WhatsApp with your order number, or email us if you would rather, and we will replace it. Approved replacements are delivered within 3 to 5 business days. Transit damage is covered by insurance on every shipment. If tracking shows delivered but nothing reached you, tell us within 72 hours, which is the reporting window Indian couriers allow. Damage caused during installation or use is not covered; replacement spares for such cases are chargeable.
