Saki-Hikari Colour Enhancing is a professional daily diet for show koi, delivering aggressive color enhancement without compromising the shiroji.

Description

A Color-Enhancing, Daily Diet For Show Koi

A professional use daily diet for koi offering aggressive color enhancement without negatively impacting the shiroji.

Features

  1. A uniquely blended formulation offering a unique balance of proteins, carbohydrates, amino acids and fats to offer your koi their best chance at excellent form and championship-grade color.
  2. Manufactured in our own facilities, to our exacting standards, to provide benefits not available with standard koi diets.
  3. Offering vivid color enhancement of the Hiban (red areas) with no negative impact on the Shiroji (white areas).
  4. Expect brilliant luster and consistent growth without the potential for internal fat-deposit buildup as a result of the carefully selected ingredient mix.
  5. Saki-Hikari is most effective when used without interruption as an exclusive daily diet. The benefits of the Hikari-Germ do not continue once feeding is discontinued. Intermittent feeding or use with other foods mixed in will not provide the optimal benefits.
  6. For best results use Saki-Hikari Color Enhancing when your water temperatures are consistently above 18C (64F). Remember the more active your koi are the more nutrition they require and lower water temperatures always dictate less feeding. Nobody knows your koi better than you do. Always avoid over-feeding and never leave uneaten food in your pond after the feeding period.

This listing is the floating Medium pellet, approximately 5.0–5.5 mm, in the 5 kg pack — Hikari item #41810. Hikari also make the Medium pellet in 2 kg and 15 kg, and a Large pellet of approximately 7.5–8.5 mm in 5 kg and 15 kg.

Composition & Analysis

Ingredients, as Hikari publish them, in their order.

yeast, spirulina, wheat germ meal, fish oil, flaked corn, dried seaweed
meal, rice bran, garlic, DL-methionine, dried Bacillus subtilis fermentation
product, astaxanthin, choline chloride, vitamin E supplement,
L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (stabilised vitamin C), inositol, d-calcium

pyridoxine hydrochloride, niacin, folic acid, vitamin D3 supplement, biotin,
vitamin B12 supplement, disodium phosphate, salt, ferrous sulfate, magnesium

The colour work is done by spirulina and astaxanthin,
both named in that list. There is no artificial colourant in this food.

  • Crude protein — min. 40.0%
  • Crude fat — min. 6.0%
  • Crude fibre — max. 2.0%
  • Moisture — max. 10.0%
  • Ash — max. 15.0%
  • Phosphorus — min. 1.2%
  • Bacillus subtilis — min. 1.0×106 CFU/g
  • Vitamin A — min. 9,000 IU/kg
  • Vitamin D3 — min. 1,800 IU/kg
  • Vitamin E — min. 180 IU/kg
  • Ascorbic acid — min. 150 mg/kg

How this differs from Saki-Hikari Growth, the other
Saki-Hikari diet on this site, because the two are easy to confuse at the
same weight. Protein is the same 40.0%. This one is the leaner of the two
— 6.0% fat against 9.0%, 1.2% phosphorus against 1.7%, a lower ash
ceiling, and lower vitamin A and E. Its probiotic is named on the label
(Bacillus subtilis) at 106 CFU/g, where Growth
carries 109. Growth is the summer growing diet; this is the
colour-finishing one.

Hikari’s own two notes on both these diets, printed here as they print them: ingredients can differ slightly between production runs because the formula is updated, and the high proportion of natural ingredients means the colour of the food itself can vary a little from one lot to the next. Neither is a fault.

Not published. A percentage for any single ingredient,
calcium, and shelf life or best-before period. Use the date printed on the
bag.

Feeding Guide

Hikari’s rule is a temperature rule, not a quantity.
This is worth saying plainly, because it is the whole of what they publish:
Hikari give a water temperature threshold and a number of feeds a day, and
they publish no grams, no percentage of body weight and no number of minutes
for this food. The amount is yours to judge from the pond.

  • Above 18 °C (64 °F) — feed
two to four times a day, according to how active the koi
are. This is the range the food is designed for.
  • Below 18 °C (64 °F) — regulate
the amount carefully against the activity of the fish and the state of the
pond. Hikari’s own advice is that this is the point to move to a diet built
for cold or unsettled water rather than keep feeding this one.
  • Very high water temperatures call for less feeding too, not more.

It only works as the whole diet. Hikari are firm about
this and it is not marketing: the benefit of the Hikari-Germ probiotic stops
when feeding stops, and mixing this food with others or feeding it
intermittently does not give the full result. Fed as the exclusive daily
diet, without interruption, is the way it is meant to be used.

Whatever the temperature — do not over-feed, and
never leave uneaten food in the pond after the feeding period. Uneaten koi
food is a water-quality problem within hours in a warm pond, and koi rarely
show you that they have had enough.

The colour claim is specific: Hikari formulate this to bring up the hi
(the red) without pushing colour into the shiroji (the white). It is a
finishing food for koi you are showing or growing on, used through the warm
months.
