The Salifert pH Test Kit tracks a parameter with major impact on coral and calcareous algae growth, which shouldn’t fluctuate much day to day.

Description

  • The pH value in a marine tank has a major impact on the growth of corals and calcareous algae and on many biological processes. The pH should not be allowed to fluctuate more than approx. 0.2 units during any 24 hour period and should preferably be kept above 8.2.
  • If the pH is too low then the cause may be a too low alkalinity and/or a build up of carbon dioxide caused by insufficient aeration
  • A low pH can be corrected by improving aeration and by increasing the alkalinity.
  • The Salifert Test Kit is sufficiently accurate to monitor minor pH fluctuations and is scaled from pH 7.4–8.7.
  • Sufficient for 50 tests.
  • For marine water only.

How to Use

  1. Add 5 ml of aquarium water to the test tube with the syringe.
  2. Add 4 drops from the pH dropping bottle and swirl gently for 10 seconds.
  3. Stand the open tube on the white part of the colour chart, look down into it from above, and read the value. If the colour falls between two patches, so does the pH.

Test at the same time each day. pH in a reef tank swings through the photoperiod — lowest before the lights come on, highest at the end of the day — so a reading taken at random tells you very little. Red Sea aim for above 8.2, with no more than about 0.2 units of movement in 24 hours.

A low pH is usually either low alkalinity or a build-up of carbon dioxide from poor aeration and a closed-up room. Test alkalinity before reaching for a pH buffer: correcting alkalinity generally corrects pH, and dosing pH directly while alkalinity is low is how people chase the number all week.
