Teraa Hara is formulated for herbivore cichlids, whose diet centers on plant material and algae with only minor animal protein.
Herbivore cichlids’ primary diet is made up of plant material, algae and occasionally invertebrates or insects. Animal protein is a minor part of their diet, whereas plant protein is the primary part.
When selecting their diet this should be kept in mind, feeding something which contains too much animal protein will result in bloat and possibly death. A plant based diet will ensure optimum growth, better agility and coloration.
Teraa Hara Cichlid is a food specifically meant for herbivorous cichlid. Our food contains high amounts of plant based ingredients. Premium ingredients such as Kale, Moringa Oleifera, Spinach, Dried Algae, Spirulina, and is supplemented with Vitamin A, C, D3 and Astaxanthin, our food provides a nutritious diet along with better immunity, vibrant coloration and faster growth. We coat our food with gut probiotics which are good for your fish’s digestive system. Expect advantage of probiotics in longer run.
Teraa’s rate, in full: feed as much as the fish can eat
within ten minutes, once or twice a day.
That is the whole of their published instruction, and it is a behaviour rule
rather than a weight, which is the right way round for cichlids — a
tank of hungry mbuna and a tank of settled adults will not eat the same
amount on the same day.
Ten minutes means ten minutes. Watch the first feed and
time it. Whatever is still drifting or lying on the sand at the end of it was
too much, and the next feed should be smaller. Herbivorous cichlids are
grazers by design; they will keep taking food long past the point where they
need it, so their own appetite is not a reliable stop signal.
Why a plant-based food matters here specifically. This is
Teraa’s own argument and it is worth repeating: for herbivorous cichlids,
plant protein is the primary part of the diet and animal protein a minor
one. Feeding a food with too much animal protein to these fish causes
bloat — the swollen, listless, hanging-in-the-water condition that
Malawi keepers know — and can kill them. A high-protein carnivore
pellet is not a treat for a herbivore; it is the thing that puts them in
trouble. If you keep mbuna, tropheus, or any of the algae-grazing rift lake
species, this is the reason to keep two tubs of food rather than one.
Twice small beats once large. Teraa allow one or two
feeds a day. Two small ones suit a grazing gut better than one large one, and
they spread the waste load across the day instead of dumping it all at
once.
The probiotic coating is a reason to keep the tub shut.
Teraa coat this food with gut probiotics and describe the benefit as one that
shows over the long run rather than in a week. Live cultures do not survive
heat or damp, so close the pack after every feed and keep it out of the sun
and away from the tank lid, where condensation gets into everything.
Not published, and not invented here. A ration by weight
or per fish, a fry schedule, and any conditioning regime for breeding. Teraa
give the ten-minute rule and stop, and so do we.
One thing we are not going to tell you: which fish this grain
suits. Teraa publish two different answers under this same product
code. Their printed catalogue lists this food in the grade our title uses;
their current website lists the same code at a different grain size, in a
reformulated version. Until we can confirm which one is in the packs on our
shelf, quoting a pellet-size-to-fish-length match here would be a guess
dressed as a specification. The size printed further up this page is the one
from the pack literature we were supplied with, and we have asked Teraa to
confirm it. If grain size matters for your fish, ask us before you
order and we will open the carton and look.
Feeding rate and dietary reasoning are Teraa’s own, and are identical
across every version of this food they publish.
Every batch we dispatch carries a minimum of 6 months’ remaining shelf life. Store this product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap or inner foil closed tightly after each use.
