Specifications

What ISTA publish for the I-546 Water Plant Clip-Pro:

Material stainless steel, rust resistant
Tip delicate, fine clip end, for planting tiny water plants and foreground
Action excellent flexibility, for precision with the smallest plants

ISTA sell a plainer Water Plant Clip (I-541-1) and a forged Professional Water Plant Clip (I-542) alongside it; the Clip-Pro is the fine-tipped one in that group.

ISTA publish no length, no weight and no finish dimension for their clip and scissor range — not in the current 2024 catalogue and not in the 2022 one either, which we checked specifically to see whether an older edition carried them. Their entries give the article number, the description and the carton quantity, and nothing else. If the working length decides your choice, ask us and we will measure the one in stock.

Setup & Use

Grip the stem, not the leaf. Take hold just above the roots or at the base of the stem. A leaf tears; a stem holds.

Plant at an angle, then release before you withdraw. Push in at roughly forty-five degrees so the roots go in ahead of the plant, open the tips, and draw the clip out along the same line. Pulling a closed clip straight up is what lifts a freshly planted stem back out of the substrate — and it is the single most common frustration in planting a carpet.

This is the tool for the foreground. Fine tips and a flexible action are what let you place a two-centimetre plantlet without crushing it. For heavier stems and rhizomes, a forged clip with a stiffer action does less damage.

Work with the tank part-drained if you are doing a whole carpet. Planting through 40 cm of water is an exercise in refraction and wet shoulders; planting in 3 cm is quick.

Rinse and dry after every use. ISTA’s own caution for their tool range. Stainless steel resists rust; it does not ignore salt or hard-water minerals left to dry on it. Rinse under the tap, wipe with a soft towel, put it away dry.

Keep them out of reach of children. Also ISTA’s, and worth repeating for anything with a point or an edge on it.

Keep tank tools to one tank if you are managing anything with a disease or pest history. A tool is as good a way to move snails and algae between tanks as a net is.

What’s in the Box

  1. Good quality planting tweezers. Ideal for smaller plants that are difficult to anchor into the substrate. The fine tips grip the plant tightly and make it easy to push deep into the substrate. High quality and at a reasonable price.
