Specifications

What ISTA publish for the I-545 PRO Scissors:

Material stainless steel, rust resistant
Finish mirror polished
Handle large grip, for ease and comfort of use
Cut clean, to minimise damage while trimming plants

A note on the finish, because ISTA’s own wording is ambiguous. Their PRO Scissors description reads ‘mirror polish or anodizing treatment (for matt black)’, which covers the whole family rather than any one article. In ISTA’s catalogue the matt black versions carry a “-1” suffix — I-545-1, I-547-1, I-538-1 — so the plain I-545 you are looking at is the mirror-polished one.

The family runs I-545 straight, I-547 curve-end and I-538 wave, each in both finishes.

ISTA publish no length, no weight and no finish dimension for their clip and scissor range — not in the current 2024 catalogue and not in the 2022 one either, which we checked specifically to see whether an older edition carried them. Their entries give the article number, the description and the carton quantity, and nothing else. If the working length decides your choice, ask us and we will measure the one in stock.

Setup & Use

Straight blades are for stems. Cut a stem plant just above a leaf node and it branches from there; cut mid-internode and you get a bare stump that takes weeks to do anything. That single habit is most of what separates a tidy stem thicket from a leggy one.

One clean cut, not a saw. ISTA’s stated design goal is a clean cut to minimise damage, and a crushed stem is an entry point for rot. If the scissors are not cutting cleanly they are blunt or bent, not in need of more force.

Trim before the tank needs it. Little and often keeps light reaching the lower leaves; one drastic cut every two months gives you bare stems and an algae bloom from the sudden drop in plant mass.

Take the clippings out. Floating trimmings decay and feed algae. A net, or the scissors themselves used as tongs, is enough.

For curves and carpets, a different blade. Curve-end scissors (I-547) follow the contour of a carpet without gouging it, and wave scissors (I-538) are for shaping. Straight blades do the routine stem work.

Rinse and dry after every use. ISTA’s own caution for their tool range. Stainless steel resists rust; it does not ignore salt or hard-water minerals left to dry on it. Rinse under the tap, wipe with a soft towel, put it away dry.

Keep them out of reach of children. Also ISTA’s, and worth repeating for anything with a point or an edge on it.

Keep tank tools to one tank if you are managing anything with a disease or pest history. A tool is as good a way to move snails and algae between tanks as a net is.
