What Is a Protein Skimmer?

A protein skimmer is a piece of marine aquarium equipment that removes dissolved organic waste from water before it breaks down into nitrate and phosphate. It works by injecting fine air bubbles into a reaction chamber — organic compounds stick to the bubble surfaces and rise into a collection cup as foam, which gets manually emptied out of the system entirely.

Why Skimmers Matter

Skimming is one of the main nutrient-export methods in a marine or reef aquarium, working alongside water changes and filter media to keep nitrate and phosphate low. Because it removes organic waste before it ever converts into nutrients, a well-tuned skimmer reduces the algae and water-quality problems those nutrients cause downstream — it’s considered close to essential for reef tanks carrying any meaningful coral or fish load, though smaller nano systems sometimes run without one.

Skimmers are sized to tank volume and bioload rather than tank dimensions alone — an undersized skimmer struggles to keep pace with a heavily stocked tank.
