What Are Nitrate (NO3) and Phosphate (PO4)?

Nitrate and phosphate are the two nutrients most responsible for algae growth in an aquarium. Both build up naturally as fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying organic matter break down — nitrate is the end product of the nitrogen cycle, while phosphate comes largely from food and waste directly. Left unchecked, elevated NO3/PO4 fuels nuisance algae and, in reef tanks, can slow coral growth and dull coloration.

Why They Matter

Freshwater tanks are generally more forgiving of nitrate, with many hobbyists targeting under 20–40 ppm via regular water changes. Reef tanks are far stricter — SPS-dominated systems often aim for near-undetectable phosphate and low single-digit nitrate, since both nutrients directly affect coral health and algae competition. The two are usually tested and managed together, since they tend to rise and fall in tandem.

Common control methods include regular water changes, protein skimming, phosphate-absorbing media, and NOPOX-type carbon-dosing products that starve algae by binding available nutrients into exportable bacterial biomass.
