Specifications

Length: 10.5 in (approximately 27 cm).
Head: twin blades — a wider head and a leaner one.
Series: Prime.
Manufacturer’s item code: B2NEPMF0001.
Packed dimensions: 30 × 3 × 7 cm — that is the packaging B2N publish, not the tool.
Sold as: one spade.

Material: steel, matte steel finish. B2N describe their tools as made from “best grade steel” and hand-finished; they do not publish a grade number or an alloy, so we cannot quote one.

Suitable substrates: B2N list soil, sand and gravel. It is a levelling and distribution tool, not a digging tool.

Who B2N recommend it for: beginner, intermediate and pro aquascapers — all three levels. The bullet list above says new and intermediate only, which undersells it; unlike the scissors and tweezers, a spade does not get harder to use as your layouts get more ambitious.

Looking after it — our advice, not a manufacturer instruction. B2N publish no care instructions. Steel aquascaping tools last for years if you rinse them in fresh water and dry them properly after every session, and they spot and pit if you put them away wet. If you use them in a marine tank, rinsing is not optional — salt creep will find any water left on the shanks or inside the joint.

Setup & Use

What it does: spreads and levels substrate evenly. B2N describe it as a layout tool with dual heads for distributing substrate and decorative sand, with the leaner head reaching the intricate areas.

Use the two heads for two different jobs. The wider blade moves volume and flattens open areas — the front sand bed, a whole soil layer, the back slope. The leaner blade is for the places your hand cannot reach cleanly: between rocks, behind wood, along the front glass, and the tight corners where sand and soil meet and you want a clean line rather than a smear.

Do the bulk of the work dry. Substrate is far easier to shape before the tank is filled, and slopes hold the shape you give them. Pour, rough it out, then use the wide head to flatten and the lean head to define edges and build up the back. Once the water is in, a spade still works but everything you disturb clouds.

Keeping a layout tidy afterwards. Sand migrates — fish move it, flow moves it, and a slope that was crisp on day one is a mound by month three. Running the wide head across the sand bed every few weeks restores the line between sand and soil, which in a nature or Iwagumi layout is most of what makes it read as deliberate.

Working in a soft substrate. Aquasoil granules crush under pressure, and crushed soil is what turns a substrate into mud. Use the spade to push and level rather than to press down, and let the width of the blade do the work.
