Chemipure is a simple-to-use filter media suitable for all types of aquatic environments, and which is manufactured with the latest technologies available. Chemipure is very economical, and provides problem-free filter operation. Chemipure is a nylon filter bag filled with a high grade blend of activated carbons and ion exchange resins. The activated carbons filter particulates and waste while the ion exchange resins help remove nitrogen (ammonia and nitrate) build up which is harmful to your fish. Chemipure also stabilizes water chemistry while keeping your pH levels perfectly constant. Its effects are far reaching, another reason why aquarists worldwide have been using it for years to help improve the life and health of their aquariums.

Setup & Use

It arrives wet, and it should stay that way until you use
it. Boyd’s direction for the original Chemi-pure is to keep it
sealed wet in its container until you are ready to fit it — this
is the one product in the range packed that way, and it is not a defect if the
container has liquid in it. Do not decant it into something else to store it,
and do not let it dry out on a shelf.

Rinse it first, and know what “rinsed” looks like. Boyd’s
method: hold the unit under running water and gently work the bag until the
water starts to run clear. On their QuickWash carbon that takes
5 to 10 seconds; on their older carbon products it can take
up to five minutes. Some carbon residue will still come off in the tank
afterwards and the water may go briefly cloudy — Boyd say this is normal
and harmless, and it clears on its own.

Where it goes. Into a high-flow area of
your sump, canister filter or hang-on-back — Boyd’s words — and as
the last stage of the filtration path, after the mechanical
media. Their FAQ is specific that it works anywhere with maximum exposure and
good water flow pushed into and around the unit, including underneath a
bio-ball trickle filter, and equally specific about the one place it must not
go: never put the unit inside a filter sock. A sock wraps it
in the debris it is meant to sit downstream of and starves it of the flow it
needs.

Replace every 2 to 4 months, depending on bio-load. Boyd
define normal use as a moderately stocked aquarium with adequate to highly
efficient filtration, and give one practical trigger: if the water starts to
go cloudy, change it then rather than waiting for the calendar.

If you run more than one unit, stagger them. Boyd’s
instruction is to change one bag at a time, a week apart, until all of them
have been replaced. Swapping every unit on the same day takes the tank’s
entire chemical filtration capacity from full to zero in an afternoon, and on
a heavily stocked system that shows.

Do not open the bag. Boyd are direct about this: they do
not recommend opening any Chemi-pure unit, and specifically warn against
buying a large one and splitting it between small tanks. The components are
combined in fixed ratios, and dividing them destroys the ratio — their
words are that the effectiveness will be greatly diminished. If you need to
top a system up to a particular volume, the answer is another whole unit, not
half of a big one.

A word about the gallon ratings. Boyd’s own FAQ says the
recommendation is based on your aquarium’s total water volume, and then lists
everything that makes that number a starting point rather than an answer: how
much of the volume is displaced by rock, gravel and hardscape; whether the
tank is lightly or heavily stocked; how much you feed and how much waste that
produces; and how efficient your filtration already is. Two tanks of the same
litres can need different amounts of media. Read the rating as the ceiling for
a well-run tank and step up a size if yours is heavily stocked.

What it is doing while it sits there. Boyd describe
Chemi-pure as working as a chemical absorption filter, an ion generator and an
exchange unit at the same time, holding pH at a constant level and, they say,
without removing trace elements — which is the reason it has a following
among African cichlid and Discus keepers, where stable water is the whole
game. It is chemical filtration: it works alongside your biological media, not
instead of it.

Specifications

  unit as a chemical absorption filter, ion generator and exchange unit.
• Carbon — QuickWash Carbon™, which Boyd
  describe as an extruded pelletized activated carbon with 30% more surface area
  than their original carbon, supplied pre-washed. Their Chemi-pure page states
  the pellet size as 0.08 mm; their Chemi-pure Blue page states 0.8 mm
  for the same carbon. We are quoting the figure from each product’s own page
  rather than reconciling two numbers Boyd have not reconciled
  themselves.
• Sizes stocked — 5 oz
  (approx. 142 g), rated by Boyd for up to 25 US gallons (about
  95 litres), Boyd SKU CP 05; and 10 oz
  (approx. 284 g), rated for up to 50 US gallons (about
  190 litres), Boyd SKU CP 10. Choose the size on this page.
• Water types — freshwater and saltwater both. Boyd
  single out African cichlids and Discus as particularly good
  applications.
• Service life — 2 to 4 months, depending on
  bio-load.
• Manufacturer — Boyd Enterprises, USA. Chemi-pure
  has been in production for over 60 years.

One number that surprises people. A 5 oz unit of the
original Chemi-pure is rated for up to 25 gallons, while a 5 oz unit of
Chemi-pure Blue or Green is rated for 35–50 gallons. Same weight of
media, very different rating — the formulations are different products,
not the same product in different colours, so do not carry a dosing habit
across from one to another.

What Boyd do not publish, and we will not fill in: the
ratio of carbon to resin or any ingredient percentage, an ash-content figure,
the net weight of the media as distinct from the stated unit size, the bag’s
dimensions, and a shelf life for an unopened container. If any of those decide
your purchase, ask us and we will put it to the distributor.

Freshness & Storage

Every batch we dispatch carries a minimum of 6 months’ remaining shelf life. Store this product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap or inner foil closed tightly after each use.

Filter media and substrates carry no manufacturing or expiry date — their working life begins on first contact with water, not on the shelf.

Returns & Replacement

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery, provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Manufacturer-sealed items cannot be returned once the seal is broken, and sale-priced items are not refundable.

If your item arrives defective or damaged, message us on WhatsApp with your order number — or email us, if you would rather — and we will replace it. Approved replacements are delivered within 3 to 5 business days. Transit damage is covered by insurance on every shipment. If tracking shows delivered but nothing reached you, tell us within 72 hours, which is the reporting window Indian couriers allow. Damage caused during installation or use is not covered; replacement spares for such cases are chargeable.
