What’s in the Box

Hydor’s parts diagram for the Prime runs A to G. Set out in plain words, this is what comes out of the carton.

  • Pump assembly — sloping rotatable fittings, tap, safety locking button, clips, impeller assembly, pump chamber and priming chamber
  • Two valve taps, which shut the connecting tubes off and release only in the closed position
  • Filter unit — body, media container and non-slip rubber feet
  • Intake unit — collector tube, extension tube, locking nut, priming clip and strainer
  • Outlet unit — collector tube, nut and multi-directional diffuser
  • Spray bar — perforated support tube, elbow coupling, suction clip and end plug
  • Flexible pipes
  • Suction cups for fixing the intake and outlet tubes to the tank wall
  • Filter media — sponges, sintered quartz bio-rings and polyester filter wool, packed inside the media container
  • Multi-language instruction manual

The chemical filtration area is the one thing the box does not fill. Hydor supply the fine, biological and primary stages and leave the chemical compartment empty for you to choose what goes in it.

About the spray bar. It is in the box. Hydor’s manual puts a “FOR US VERSION ONLY” heading over the spray bar instructions, and their Italian and Portuguese parts lists say the same — true of some markets, but not of the stock we ship. We have confirmed our own cartons: the part is included. Fit it in place of the multi-directional diffuser when you want the return spread along the tank wall rather than delivered as a single directed jet, which is usually the better choice on a planted tank and on any aquarium where surface movement matters more than throw.

Compatibility

Hydor’s technical data for the Prime 10, at 220–240 V ~ 50 Hz, which is the supply this unit is built for.

  • Power consumption — 9 W
  • Recommended aquariums — 80–150 litres
  • Filter circulation — 350 l/h
  • Pump output — 580 l/h
  • Maximum head — 90 cm
  • Filtering volume — 1.5 litres
  • Water needed to prime — 250 ml
  • Canister size — 12.5 × 31 cm

Two of those figures are easy to misread, so here is how Hydor define them. Filter circulation is the flow measured with media, hoses, U connections and valves in place — the number you will actually get. Pump output is the bare pump. And self priming is not a flow figure at all: it is the volume of water you pour into the priming chamber to start the filter.

Sizing. Hydor’s own advice is to step up a model: for marine tanks, or where you want more filtering capacity than usual, choose the next size above the recommended aquarium range. The recommended range assumes an ordinary freshwater stocking.

Where it can be used. Indoor use only, in water up to 35 °C (95 °F). The four filtration stages are chemical (compartment supplied empty), fine, biological and primary; any media that fits the container and suits your water can go in the chemical stage.

Safety & Precautions

From the English section of Hydor’s Prime manual.

Electrical

  • Indoor use only, in fluids up to 35 °C.
  • Check that your mains voltage matches the voltage on the unit’s label.
  • Check the cord and the unit are undamaged before connecting to the mains.
  • The cord cannot be replaced or repaired. If it is damaged, the whole unit has to be changed.
  • Installation must follow national wiring rules.
  • Always disconnect every electrical appliance inside and outside the aquarium before putting your hands in the water.
  • The appliance is not intended for use by people, children included, with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or without experience and knowledge, unless a person responsible for their safety supervises or instructs them. Children should be supervised so they do not play with it.

Priming and placement

  • While it is priming, the filter must sit below aquarium level. Only move it to the side of the tank after it has primed.
  • Mount the intake and outlet units near opposite rear corners, with the locking nuts on the outside of the tank.
  • Cut the flexible tubes square, at 90° to the tube wall, and run them without kinks or twists.
  • Connect the outlet tube to the port marked OUT and the intake tube to the port marked IN.
  • Check every connection and nut over the first 24 hours of operation.
  • Some noise is normal while air is still in the ducts. It clears once the filter has fully primed.

The valve taps

  • The taps exist to stop the siphon emptying your tank during maintenance. They release only in the OFF position — that is deliberate, not a fault.
  • Shut both valves, unscrew them and pull them off the filter before opening it.
  • The taps must stay attached to the flexible tubes.
  • A small amount of water will drip from inside the valves. That is normal and does not mean they are faulty.

Cleaning

  • Stand the filter body in a bowl before opening it, so a spill does not matter.
  • Open the clips until they click out of the locked position, then lever the pump assembly off using the slots provided.
  • Wash or replace only part of the media at a time — doing all of it at once destroys the bacterial colony.
  • Clean the impeller and its chamber, the priming chamber and the water ducts every time you clean the media, using a stiff brush and running water.
  • No solvents and no detergents of any kind.
  • Reassemble the whole unit in reverse order.
  • When you refit the pump assembly, line up the reference marks and leave the clips open. Forcing the unit in with the clips closed will split the canister.
