Seachem Brackish Salt is a chemically balanced, plant-safe alternative to sodium chloride salts, ideal for livebearers and brackish fish.

Description

  • Creates ideal environment for livebearers and brackish fish.
  • Safe for plants.
  • Effective alternative to the sodium chloride based aquarium salts so prevalent.

Seachem Brackish Salt is a chemically sound blend of salts designed to replicate the native environment of live bearers and other brackish estuary fish without adversely impacting aquatic plants when used at regionally specific recommended dosage. The salt is also well suited for routine aquarium freshwater use. It does not impact pH or provide buffering.

Unlike other aquarium salts currently available to the hobbyist, Brackish Salt™ is more than just a simple sodium chloride product. These other salts can burn leaves and roots in a planted aquarium. However, Brackish Salt does not cause this type of damage, and actually provides many nutrients crucial to healthy plant growth. Dosing of Brackish Salt allows for specific duplication of different brackish water environments found worldwide (such as the waters of Sumatra or the waters of Borneo). Brackish Salt can also be dosed for general brackish water community aquariums and general freshwater community aquarium. Brackish Salt is a safe and effective alternative to the sodium chloride based aquarium salts so prevalent

Specifications

Seachem items #0226 (300 g) and #0223 (600 g). A blend of salts built to reproduce a brackish estuary, not a tub of sodium chloride. Seachem’s point about it is a plant one: ordinary aquarium salt is nothing but sodium chloride, and elevated sodium and chloride burn leaves and roots. This carries only a minimal amount of sodium chloride, and supplies nutrients plants use.

It does not impact pH and provides no buffering. If you need the pH moved as well, that is a separate product.

Seachem publish a dose per fish type rather than one number, because a brackish tank is defined by which estuary it is imitating:

Fish Dose
Live bearers: guppies, swordtails, platies, some mollies 20 g (about 1 tablespoon) per 40 L (10 US gallons)
Yucatan and Sri Lankan estuary fish: archers, chromides, some mollies 15 g (about 2 teaspoons) per 12 L (3 US gallons)
Thai, Cambodian, Bornean and Sumatran estuary fish: Datnioides 40 g (about 2 tablespoons) per 12 L (3 US gallons)
Scats up to 80 g (about 4 tablespoons) per 12 L (3 US gallons), not for planted tanks
General aquarium salt use: mineral replacement or disease control 20 g (about 1 tablespoon) per 40 L (10 US gallons)

For a mixed population Seachem say to use an average dose representative of the species present. Note how far apart the ends of that table are: the scat dose is roughly thirteen times the livebearer dose per litre. Dosing a brackish tank by habit rather than by species is how fish end up in the wrong water.

Seachem make the line in 300 g, 600 g and 4 kg.

Setup & Use

Use it when setting the tank up and at every water change. Never when topping up evaporated water: the salt did not evaporate, so replacing it concentrates the tank.

Dissolve it in fresh water before it goes in. Seachem’s instruction. Undissolved salt on a substrate is a local overdose wherever it lands.

Raise the salinity of an established tank gradually. Seachem say to add salt to an established tank slowly; the fish that are already in it have acclimated to whatever the water is now.

Work out the dose from the species, not the tank. The table in the specifications is the whole product: the difference between an archer tank and a scat tank is a factor of several, and both are on the same label.

Keep the tub closed and dry. These are hygroscopic powders. A tub that has caked has also changed density, and a level teaspoon of caked powder is not the dose printed on the label.

Freshness & Storage

Every batch we dispatch carries a minimum of 6 months’ remaining shelf life. Store this product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap or inner foil closed tightly after each use.

Filter media and substrates carry no manufacturing or expiry date: their working life begins on first contact with water, not on the shelf.

Returns & Replacement

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery, provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Manufacturer-sealed items cannot be returned once the seal is broken, and sale-priced items are not refundable.

If your item arrives defective or damaged, message us on WhatsApp with your order number, or email us if you would rather, and we will replace it. Approved replacements are delivered within 3 to 5 business days. Transit damage is covered by insurance on every shipment.
