This Seachem filter sock removes suspended debris and detritus before it breaks down into excess nitrate and phosphate, protecting water quality.
Filter socks are a critical component in maintaining water quality in aquariums. They remove suspended debris and detritus, which often lead to excess dissolved organics, nitrate, and phosphate when left unchecked. This makes Seachem Filter Socks an integral addition to any sump and overflow system.
What it is. A mechanical pre-filter sock for a sump, built to strip suspended debris and detritus out of the water before it breaks down into dissolved nitrate and phosphate load.
Where this sits in the Seachem range. Seachem sells this sock in three micron ratings (250, 200 and 100) in two sizes, small (10 x 30 cm / 4″ x 12″) and large (17.5 x 40.5 cm / 7″ x 16″). This is the 200 micron rating in the small size, the middle of the three, finer felt construction rather than the coarser mesh used on the 250 micron sock.
What the micron rating means. Seachem’s own explanation: a micron is one millionth of a metre, and the rating describes the mesh opening: the lower the number, the finer the weave and the smaller the particle it traps.
Welded seams, singed finish. Welded rather than sewn seams, since a threaded seam breaks down with repeated washing, and a singed finish so the fabric doesn’t shed loose fibre back into the tank.
Fits a standard sump overflow via the sock’s plastic collar, sized to match: 10 cm / 4″ for this small size.
A middle-ground choice between the coarser 250 micron sock and the finer 100 micron sock: enough particulate capture for most reef sumps without clogging as fast as the 100 micron rating.
Routine cleaning: rinse under a high-pressure hose once the sock visibly discolours, anywhere from every few days to weekly depending on bioload, per Seachem.
Deep cleaning: soak in a 1:10 bleach-to-water solution for 24 hours, then rinse thoroughly under a high-pressure hose before it goes back in the sump.
