Seachem StressGuard is a premium slime coat protectant that reduces stress and ammonia toxicity while promoting healing in handled or transported fish.
Stress Guard is the premium slime coat protection product. StressGuard™ will reduce stress and ammonia toxicity whenever handling or transporting fish. Stress Guard binds to exposed protein in wounds to promote healing of injured fish and to reduce the likelihood of primary and secondary infections. StressGuard is compatible with all medications except those that are copper based. Stress Guard is not amine based and will not interfere with Purigen; or HyperSorb regeneration. Stress Guard does not coat resins or clog filtration like competing “slime coat” type products can. What makes StressGuard very successful at healing is the fact that it contains protein active colloids. This protein active colloidal agent actively seeks out any wounds, abrasions, or places where exposed proteins are and attaches to this area to help directly deliver the disinfectant in the product and start the healing process. This protein active colloid, because it binds to the exposed proteins, also acts like a liquid bandage to the abrasion. Some products are marketed to be squirted in the bag when a fish is purchased. Those products are generally acidic, with some brands being a very strong acid. Putting such a product in a small, enclosed container with a fish often does more harm than any intended good. StressGuard has a pH of 7.0. It will not affect the pH of an aquarium, even at large doses. There are no other products on the market that can compare to the effectiveness of Stress Guard.
What it is. Not a fertiliser — a stress-reduction and wound-care conditioner. Seachem states it reduces the toxicity of ammonia, acts as an antiseptic, and promotes the healing of damaged tissue, and is formulated for both marine and freshwater use.
How Seachem says it works. Rather than an irritant coating, the company describes “protein-active colloids” that seek out wounds, abrasions and exposed tissue and act there like a liquid bandage, delivering a mild disinfectant directly to the damaged area.
Compatibility. Seachem states it’s compatible with all medications except copper-based treatments, and safe for planted tanks and reef tanks with invertebrates when dosed as directed. Turn off the protein skimmer while dosing; carbon filtration doesn’t need to come out.
Seachem’s own dose. ½ to 1 capful (2.5–5 ml) per 40 L (10 US gallons), daily, until signs of stress have gone or healing is complete. The dose may be safely doubled. Seachem states the active ingredient dissipates within 24 hours, which is what makes daily dosing safe.
When to use it. During handling, transport, netting, new arrivals, or any other stress event — and alongside medication or an injury, where the wound-care effect applies.
