Optimized bio-filter medium with perfect volume usage, long intervals between cleaning and top decomposition performance. SUBSTRAT pro consists of pearl-shaped sintered glass. The spherical shape gives a high bulk density. Thus the whole of the volume in the filter (filter baskets or modules) can be utilized. Also the optimum surface of the beads provides intensive colonization of the important purification bacteria. Due to the high number of bacteria, peak nitrite loads are more easily reduced and the maintenance intervals of the filter material are longer. EHEIM SUBSTRAT pro is suitable for fresh and marine water, is washable and can be reused.

Tip: Never clean or change all the filter media together in one operation (and never clean too rigorously). The bacteria cultures must not be completely destroyed, otherwise re-colonization will be retarded. The filter baskets in the external filters and filter modules in the internal filters aqua-ball and biopower are ideal for partial cleaning.

Setup & Use

Fill the filter baskets or modules of an external filter, or the media compartment of an internal filter. The point of the spherical shape is bulk density: round beads pack without voids, so the whole of the volume in the basket is doing work rather than passing water round the outside of it. The bead surface is what the purification bacteria colonise, and the high bacterial population is why EHEIM claim easier handling of nitrite peaks and longer intervals between cleans.

Rinse it before first use.

Cleaning. Rinse the medium in water taken out of the tank, never under the tap and never with detergent. Chlorine and soap kill the bacteria you are trying to keep. EHEIM’s standing instruction for every biological medium is the same: never clean or change all the filter media in one operation. Do one layer at a time, a few weeks apart, so the untouched layers carry the tank while the cleaned one recolonises.

Freshness & Storage

Every batch we dispatch carries a minimum of 6 months’ remaining shelf life. Store this product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap or inner foil closed tightly after each use.

Filter media and substrates carry no manufacturing or expiry date. Their working life begins on first contact with water, not on the shelf.

Returns & Replacement

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery, provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Manufacturer-sealed items cannot be returned once the seal is broken, and sale-priced items are not refundable.

If your item arrives defective or damaged, message us on WhatsApp with your order number, or email us if you would rather, and we will replace it. Approved replacements are delivered within 3 to 5 business days. Transit damage is covered by insurance on every shipment. If tracking shows delivered but nothing reached you, tell us within 48 hours, which is the reporting window Indian couriers allow. Damage caused during installation or use is not covered; replacement spares for such cases are chargeable.
