This Red Sea ReefMat Sump Modification Kit includes purpose-built tools to make your sump ReefMat-ready in minutes.
Specialty tools to make your sump ReefMat-ready in minutes
Although the newer Red Sea REEFER generations come with ReefMat-ready sumps, older generations may require some modification to get your new ReefMat 500 or 1200 Fleece Roller to fit.
Removing the glass and plastic components from the Red Sea Reefer sump to accommodate your ReefMat Filter Roller will require cutting through a layer of silicone that is less than 0.2mm thick. A regular utility knife is too thick to handle this job, which is why Red Sea has provided a set of specially manufactured blades that are both thin and flexible enough to get the job done correctly.
The modification process will take an estimated 15 minutes and can be done without draining the sump or removing it from the cabinet.
What’s Included?
1x Utility blade handle with snap-off blades.
2x 0.1mm Blades.
2x 0.15mm Blades.
1x Blade storage case.
1x Small glass scraper.
What the job actually is. Making an older REEFER sump take a ReefMat means removing some of its glass and plastic components. Those are held on by a layer of silicone less than 0.2 mm thick. A normal utility blade is too thick and too stiff to get into that joint, which is the entire reason this kit exists — the 0.1 mm and 0.15 mm blades supplied are thin and flexible enough to follow it.
Time and disruption. Red Sea put the job at about 15 minutes, and it can be done without draining the sump or taking it out of the cabinet.
Sequence. Work the thin blade into the silicone joint and free the component, then use the small glass scraper to take off the silicone residue so the finish is clean and nothing is left to trap detritus. Snap blade segments off as they dull and keep spares in the storage case.
Check your model before you cut. Red Sea publish per-model installation options for the ReefMat, and they are not all the same job. A REEFER 170, 200 or 250 needs the sump modified and the ATO reservoir removed to take a ReefMat 500 alongside an RSK-300 skimmer, and the valved downpipe has to be shortened. A 350 or 425 has both a “maximum utilisation” route that needs modification and a “no modification” route, with different trade-offs in what else fits in the sump afterwards. Work out which route you want first — the cut is not reversible.
If you are not sure which silicone is which — the thin bonding layer holding a removable part, or the structural seam holding the sump itself together — stop and ask us or your installer before the blade goes in. This is a cut made against a tank that is in service.
