Description
Monitors nitrite to help prevent fish loss Benefits:
- Reads Nitrite levels fast and accurate
Follow API Easy Care Guide and use the NITRITE TEST KIT:
- During Regular Care
- When addressing Water Problem Solving issues
Taking a few minutes each week to maintain and monitor aquarium conditions is the key to a healthy aquarium. Nitrite is produced in the aquarium by fish waste and uneaten fish food. Toxic nitrite is produced by nitrifying bacteria in the biological filter as it breaks down ammonia. Low levels of nitrite inhibit respiration and suppress the immune system; high levels cause suffocation. The NITRITE TEST KIT tests for harmful nitrite levels from 0 to 5 ppm. For use in freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
How to Use
The drop count and the wait time for this kit come off the leaflet in the box, and we are not going to guess at them here. API publish the full step-by-step method for their ammonia kit but not for this one — the nitrite page carries testing frequency and a safety sheet, and the instruction leaflet they host is an image-only scan we cannot read the numbers out of. Borrowing the ammonia procedure would be a guess, and a wrong drop count gives you a wrong reading that looks entirely convincing.
What API do publish for this kit:
- How often. Test every other day while a new aquarium or pond is establishing, and once a week after the biological filter is established — which takes about four to six weeks.
- Tube care. Rinse the test tube with water immediately after the reading. Left standing, the reagent stains the glass over time and the staining does not come out.
- Shaking. Shake the reagent bottle vigorously, but be gentle with the tube. Close the cap tight, hold a thumb over it, and invert the tube back and forth every one to two seconds for the stated time. The goal is mixing, not agitation.
The general handling rule applies here as on any liquid kit: read against the white of the colour card in good light, and do not tip the tube's contents back into the tank.
Tests per Kit
We do not have a number for this, and we are not going to invent one. API list this kit in a single pack size — "1 CT" — and publish neither the reagent volume nor a test count on their product page. The leaflet they host is an image scan with no readable text.
This kit runs on a single reagent bottle rather than two, so the count is set by that one bottle and by the drops-per-test printed in the leaflet.
If the number matters to your buying decision, message us and we will read it off the carton in stock.
What's in the Box
API's own contents list for this kit:
- One nitrite test solution bottle.
- One test tube with cap.
- One instruction manual.
- One colour card.
The kit reads 0 to 5 ppm and works in both fresh and salt water.
Note the difference from the ammonia kit, which uses two reagent bottles and ships two colour cards: this one is a single-reagent test with one card. Nothing else is in the carton.
