Dr. Tim’s Waste-Away uses natural bacteria to break down sludge and waste hidden in sand beds, rock, and filter media that regular water changes miss.
Description
Even with regular water changes, sludge and waste can build up in sand beds, rocks, filter pads, and many other places throughout aquariums that are hard to see and reach. Dr.Tim's Waste-Away employs natural bacteria that will dissolve the waste making available to be removed through water changes. When it is used regularly, it can help prevent the build up of dirt and sludge, and also reduce nitrates and phosphates.

Part of managing nitrate and phosphate levels — see our guide to Nitrate & Phosphate for why these two parameters are tracked together.
Compatibility
Freshwater and saltwater both, and reef safe. DrTim's isolated these bacteria from their own freshwater and saltwater aquaria and ponds, which is their argument for why it works faster than a generic sludge product. They also recommend it for turtle tanks.
What it actually does: several species of bacteria that attack organic waste — both dissolved and particulate — and in the process consume phosphate and nitrate. It dissolves sludge in sand beds, under rock and in filter pads, unclogs gravel and coral beds, and keeps filter media flowing longer. The waste does not vanish; it becomes available to be exported by your water changes and skimmer.
It contains no phosphate itself, which is worth checking against any other bacterial or carbon-dosing product you use — several do.
It is not an algaecide and not an antibiotic, and that is the point. DrTim's argument against the traditional treatments is that they kill the cyanobacteria and the beneficial nitrifying and coral-symbiont bacteria alike, and then the dead cells decay into exactly the organics that fed the problem in the first place. Waste-Away is slower and removes the food supply instead.
Oxygen is the compatibility question that matters. Any tank already running warm, crowded or poorly circulated has little oxygen margin, and this product asks for some. Half doses, extra aeration, and stop if the water clouds heavily.
With the rest of the range. Waste-Away and One & Only do opposite jobs and do not replace each other — One & Only builds the biological filter, Waste-Away clears the organic load. DrTim's cyanobacteria protocol pairs Waste-Away with Re-Fresh, which we do not currently stock; if you are treating cyano and want to follow their method exactly, ask us before you start.
Snails and shrimp: the warning DrTim's publish is against high doses of Re-Fresh, not against Waste-Away. They publish no invertebrate caution for Waste-Away itself.
Dosage & Directions
Start at half a dose. This is the one instruction on the bottle that DrTim's print in capitals.
Full dose: 10 mL per 10 US gallons (about 38 litres).
Half dose: 5 mL per 10 US gallons.
DO NOT OVERDOSE. DrTim's warning is about oxygen, not about the fish reacting to the product: a large bacterial bloom consumes oxygen, and on a dirty tank a full first dose can drop it far enough to matter. On a heavily soiled tank the half dose may still cause temporary cloudy water and a low ammonia reading — that is the bacteria working, and it is also your signal to go carefully.
Run extra aeration while you are dosing. An air stone costs nothing and removes the only real risk this product carries.
The four-week programme for cyanobacteria and slime algae — DrTim's own protocol, and worth following in order:
First, remove as much of the algae or cyano as you physically can — siphon it, net it, filter it out. Nothing else works until you do.
Then, for 10 to 14 days, dose DrTim's Re-Fresh every 3 to 4 days at 5 mL per 10 gallons. Note that high doses of Re-Fresh may harm snails and shrimp, so DrTim's ask you to take those out of the tank for this stage.
Then start Waste-Away: a half dose on day 1, another half dose two days later, and — if there has been no cloudiness — a full dose on day 4. Carry on with a full dose every 2 to 3 days for two weeks, watching for cloudy water each time.
After that, dose Waste-Away at least once a month as routine maintenance.
And then work out why it happened. DrTim's put this in their own instructions and they are right to: cyano and slime grow because organics and nutrients are high. Overfeeding, overstocking or skipped maintenance will bring it all back, whatever you dose.
Storage: never freeze it, and never let it sit above 95 °F (35 °C). DrTim's rate it for 6 months at normal room temperature and a year at around 50 °F (10 °C); refrigeration is not required but gives the longest life. Every bottle is stamped on the back with a ‘best used by’ month and year — past it the product is not dead, only weaker.
Pack Size
250 mL. DrTim's own range is sold in ounces — 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 oz — and 250 mL sits just above their 8 oz bottle, which they rate for 240 gallons (908 litres). Pro rata, this bottle treats roughly 950 litres, or about 25 full doses.
What that means for your tank. On a 200 litre aquarium a full dose is about 53 mL, so this bottle holds a little under five full doses. As monthly maintenance, that is most of a year.
But if you are treating cyanobacteria, buy two. DrTim's four-week programme works out at roughly 320 to 420 mL on a 200 litre tank — two half doses followed by five to seven full ones — so a single 250 mL bottle will not see you through it. Running out halfway is worse than not starting, because the bloom recovers in the gap.
