This ISTA CO2 Regulator assembles without tools and uses an air-tight design for accurate, reliable CO2 output.
Description
CHARACTERISTICS
Easy assembling, no tool required in fastening to CO2 cylinder.
With air tighten design, provides accurate and reliable CO2 output.
The ISTA Vertical Pressure Reduced Regulator ( Face - UP ) Gold sets and holds CO2 output pressure from the cylinder to your diffuser — pair it with a bubble counter to fine-tune the injection rate; see our guide to CO2 & Bubble Count.
Specifications
What ISTA publish for the I-648 Vertical Pressure-Reduced Regulator:
Type vertical pressure-reduced CO2 regulator
Solenoid none
Needle valve precision, for accurate and reliable CO2 output
Pressure pressure-reduced design, for stable output
Connection hand air-tighten, no tool required
Finish anodised, with a laser-engraved logo
Cylinder type face-up CO2 cylinders
Colour gold
ISTA list four finishes: I-648-1 red, I-648-2 green, I-648-3 gold and I-648-4 blue. The anodic treatment is not cosmetic only — ISTA's stated reason for it is a harder surface.
What ISTA do not publish for this model:
- Working pressure and outlet pressure range
- Gauge range
- Cylinder thread specification
- Dimensions and weight
Those rows are simply not on ISTA's specification sheet or in their catalogue, and we would rather leave them blank than print a number we cannot source. If one of them decides your purchase, ask us and we will measure the stock item before you order.
Compatibility
This is a regulator, not a controller — there is no solenoid in it. That is the single most important thing to know before you buy, and it is clear in ISTA's own material: the I-648's feature list is pressure-reduced output, a precision needle valve and a hand-tightened connection, while their I-643 controller adds a German-made solenoid. No solenoid means no timer control and no automatic day/night switching. You set the bubble rate by hand and the CO2 runs continuously until you close the cylinder valve.
That is a real decision, not a detail. CO2 injected through the night, when the plants are not photosynthesising, does nothing for growth and does pull the pH down. Plenty of planted tanks run 24-hour CO2 successfully at a modest rate; plenty of others need it off at night. If you want the option, the I-643 controller is the model with the solenoid.
Face-up cylinders. ISTA build the I-648 for CO2 cylinders that stand upright with the valve on top, and pair it on their own site with their face-up aluminium cylinder range. Their face-side fittings are a separate product; check which way your cylinder is meant to stand.
It works with ISTA's bubble counters, check valves and diffusers, which are all built around the same outlet. You need a check valve in the line whatever else you buy.
Setup & Use
Close the outlet before you fit it. ISTA's sequence: turn the regulator's CO2 outlet to fully closed first, then hand-tighten the regulator onto the cylinder firmly. Fitting a regulator with the needle valve open dumps gas through the line the moment you open the cylinder.
Then open the cylinder slowly. Turn and release the cylinder's on/off valve until the pressure gauge comes alive. Slowly is the operative word — a fast crack of the valve slams full cylinder pressure into the gauge.
Set the bubble rate at the needle valve, and be patient with it. Small movements make large differences. Set a rate, leave it for a day, read your drop checker or pH, and adjust once. Chasing it hour by hour is how people gas fish.
Taking it off the cylinder. ISTA give this as a three-step procedure and every step matters: close the cylinder's on/off valve completely; open the regulator to release all the CO2 still inside it, until the gauge reads zero; only then unscrew the regulator from the cylinder by hand.
Safety & Precautions
Never break the connection while the gauge still reads pressure. This is ISTA's own instruction and it is the one that matters. Close the cylinder's on/off valve first, then open the outlet and let the gas already inside the regulator escape until the needle sits on zero, and only then unscrew it from the cylinder. A regulator taken off a live cylinder is a projectile.
Hands only, no tools. ISTA design the connection to be tightened and released by hand and print an explicit caution against using a wrench or any other tool on it. A spanner distorts the sealing face, and a distorted sealing face is a slow leak you will not find until the cylinder is empty.
Keep it dry, upright and unknocked. ISTA ask that the unit is not allowed to contact water, is not dropped or struck, and is set up straight. A dropped regulator can read correctly and still be damaged inside.
Secure the cylinder itself. ISTA's caution for this range is to fix the cylinder firmly so it cannot fall, because the impact of a falling cylinder is taken by the regulator screwed to the top of it. A cylinder strap or a cabinet clamp costs almost nothing next to the regulator it protects.
Fit a check valve between the regulator and the tank. ISTA state this plainly for the range: without one, water can siphon back up the CO2 line into the regulator when the gas stops. That is how these units die.
CO2 is an asphyxiant. A cylinder venting into a small, closed room displaces air. This matters most in a cabinet or a cupboard: leave the cylinder somewhere ventilated, and if you smell nothing but feel headachy near a leaking setup, ventilate first and diagnose afterwards.
Warranty & Support
This product is covered by warranty as per the manufacturer policy, against material and manufacturing defects from the date of purchase.
Warranty support is handled by us directly. Message our WhatsApp support with your order number and we will diagnose the fault first — most cases are solved by replacing a single part, so you rarely need to send the whole unit. If the item does need to come back, it ships to our Delhi or Pune warehouse, whichever one served your order, and courier cost in both directions is borne by the customer. Your GST invoice is valid proof of purchase for the claim.
Returns & Replacement
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery, provided the item is unused and in its original packaging. Manufacturer-sealed items cannot be returned once the seal is broken, and sale-priced items are not refundable.
If your item arrives defective or damaged, message us on WhatsApp with your order number — or email us, if you would rather — and we will replace it. Approved replacements are delivered within 3 to 5 business days. Transit damage is covered by insurance on every shipment. If tracking shows delivered but nothing reached you, tell us within 72 hours, which is the reporting window Indian couriers allow. Damage caused during installation or use is not covered; replacement spares for such cases are chargeable.
