Part of managing nitrate and phosphate levels — see our guide to Nitrate & Phosphate for why these two parameters are tracked together.
Compatibility
What it is. A liquid filter medium and, in KZ's phrase, a secondary biological facilitator — it carries other products into the corals and takes waste out to the skimmer. KZ's catalogue on the Coral Snow family: neutralises undesirable acids and is the solution for slime algae and cyanobacteria when mixed with CyanoClean; helps eliminate inhibitors released by freshly imported or damaged corals; and helps stabilise the biology after coral losses. The dosing guide singles out the Plus version for reducing phosphate.
Where this sits in the Korallen-Zucht range. KZ build everything around four basis products — ZEOvit zeolite media, ZEObak, ZEOfood and ZEOstart — which together are the ZEOvit system. Everything else in the range, this product included, is a layer on top: colour products, problem solvers, and single elements. KZ's own guidance is that the products can each be used separately, without the complete ZEOvit system and without the other KZ products, but that the full effect in quality and colouration comes only from running the system.
This is the product KZ pair with almost everything else: with ZEObak against slime algae, with CyanoClean and with ZEOzym against cyanobacteria, with Bio-Mate and with ZEOlife. KZ specifically say it increases the effectiveness of B-Balance and the potassium-iodide-fluoride concentrate.
No ozone and no UV while you are running the ZEOvit system. That is KZ's instruction, and the reason is the point of the system: ozone and UV destroy the microorganisms and elements the whole method depends on.
KZ's own target water parameters, for any tank running their products: calcium 400–410 mg/L, magnesium 1,260–1,280 mg/L, carbonate hardness 6.5–8, potassium 380–400 mg/L, salinity 33–35 ppt. They add a warning worth repeating: higher figures bring no advantage. Neither growth nor colouration in SPS corals is improved by pushing past these, and higher levels tend to have negative effects.
Dosage & Directions
Korallen-Zucht's own dose. 1 ml per 100 litres, once or twice a week.
How and where it goes in. Directly into the tank, into the flow. All equipment stays running. Mix Coral Snow with the additive you want it to carry, let the mixture stand for five minutes, then add it to a high-flow area of the tank.
Start below the figure, not at it. KZ's own instruction for a first-time user, a lightly stocked tank, or a tank with little growth: reduce the dosage recommendation and adjust upward. Their words — do not act on the principle that the more the merrier.
Calculate on gross volume. KZ ask you to use the gross water amount for dosing arithmetic, not a net figure with rock and sand deducted.
The cloudiness is meant to happen. KZ state that the initial cloudiness is harmless to all fish and to sensitive corals. It clears, and the water afterwards is noticeably clearer than before.
It needs a skimmer. Coral Snow is a clay-like medium that is exported by skimming. Bulk Reef Supply warn that using it on a skimmerless tank risks the material simply settling somewhere.
