Seachem Brackish Salt is a chemically balanced, plant-safe alternative to sodium chloride salts, ideal for livebearers and brackish fish.
Description
Seachem Brackish Salt 300 gm
Seachem’s Brackish Salt™ is a chemically sound blend of salts designed to replicate the native environment of live bearers and other brackish estuary fish without adversely impacting aquatic plants when used at regionally specific recommended dosage. The salt is also well suited for routine aquarium freshwater use. It does not impact pH or provide buffering.
Unlike other aquarium salts currently available to the hobbyist, Brackish Salt™ is more than just a simple sodium chloride product. These other salts can burn leaves and roots in a planted aquarium. However, Brackish Salt™ does not cause this type of damage, and actually provides many nutrients crucial to healthy plant growth. Dosing of Brackish Salt™ allows for specific duplication of different brackish water environments found worldwide (such as the waters of Sumatra or the waters of Borneo). Brackish Salt™ can also be dosed for general brackish water community aquariums and general freshwater community aquarium. Brackish Salt™ is a safe and effective alternative to the sodium chloride based aquarium salts so prevalent.
Directions
Use when setting up an aquarium and when making water changes. To add salt to an established tank, do so gradually. It is best to dissolve the salt in freshwater before use. Avoid using salt when simply replacing evaporated water.
Specifications
Seachem items #0226 (300 g) and #0223 (600 g). A blend of salts built to reproduce a brackish estuary, not a tub of sodium chloride. Seachem's point about it is a plant one: ordinary aquarium salt is nothing but sodium chloride, and elevated sodium and chloride burn leaves and roots. This carries only a minimal amount of sodium chloride, and supplies nutrients plants use.
It does not impact pH and provides no buffering. If you need the pH moved as well, that is a separate product.
Seachem publish a dose per fish type rather than one number, because a brackish tank is defined by which estuary it is imitating:
| Fish | Dose |
|---|---|
| Live bearers — guppies, swordtails, platies, some mollies | 20 g (about 1 tablespoon) per 40 L (10 US gallons) |
| Yucatan and Sri Lankan estuary fish — archers, chromides, some mollies | 15 g (about 2 teaspoons) per 12 L (3 US gallons) |
| Thai, Cambodian, Bornean and Sumatran estuary fish — Datnioides | 40 g (about 2 tablespoons) per 12 L (3 US gallons) |
| Scats | up to 80 g (about 4 tablespoons) per 12 L (3 US gallons) — not for planted tanks |
| General aquarium salt use — mineral replacement or disease control | 20 g (about 1 tablespoon) per 40 L (10 US gallons) |
For a mixed population Seachem say to use an average dose representative of the species present. Note how far apart the ends of that table are: the scat dose is roughly thirteen times the livebearer dose per litre. Dosing a brackish tank by habit rather than by species is how fish end up in the wrong water.
Seachem make the line in 300 g, 600 g and 4 kg.
