Seachem Meridian is a natural oolitic aragonite substrate that helps stabilize calcium and alkalinity while preventing large pH swings.
Seachem Meridian is an all natural oolitic (spherical or egg shaped) aragonite substrate for all reef and marine aquaria. Seachem Meridian is the premium aragonite substrate for the reef aquaria. It’s grain size (a fairly uniform 0.25 – 0.50 mm) is ideally suited to reef inhabitants and it’s chemical composition will assist in stabilizing calcium and alkalinity while preventing large pH declines. Unlike competing “wet” products marketed under the guise of being “live”, Meridian is sold dry, thus you pay only for gravel and not for unneeded water. These products imply that they contain living, microscopic animals when in fact they only contain common bacteria. Dry or wet, there are bacteria on every substrate available. If one is concerned with shortening the aquarium cycle time for a new system, then the use of a product designed for that particular purpose would be more appropriate (such as Seachem’s Stability).
What it is. An all-natural oolitic aragonite substrate for reef and marine aquaria, “oolitic” meaning small, rounded, egg-shaped grains rather than crushed coral fragments. Seachem’s claim: the chemistry helps stabilise calcium and alkalinity and resists large pH drops.
Grain size. Seachem’s own spec: a fairly uniform 0.25. 0.50 mm, sized for reef substrate-dwelling life rather than as a coarse decorative gravel.
Sold dry, like the rest of Seachem’s aragonite line, you’re paying for substrate, not water weight, unlike a “live” wet sand.
Seachem’s own mineral analysis (ppm): calcium 347,750; strontium 8,420; magnesium 1,845; iron 44.2; manganese 2.6; molybdenum 2.35; vanadium 8.1; zinc 4.75.
Pack size. Sold in 3.5 kg and 9 kg bags.
Rinse before use to remove residual dust, though it is pre-rinsed at the factory.
Fill slowly, pouring into a bowl set on the substrate so the bed isn’t disturbed directly.
Initial cloudiness is normal and clears with mechanical filtration or Clarity.
Expect a slow rise in GH, KH and pH over time to as an aragonite substrate it steadily releases calcium and carbonate into the water, which is the same mechanism behind its buffering claim above.
Every batch we dispatch carries a minimum of 6 months’ remaining shelf life. Store this product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap or inner foil closed tightly after each use.
Filter media and substrates carry no manufacturing or expiry date: their working life begins on first contact with water, not on the shelf.
