Ten inches is the number that decides whether this is your
tool.
Back 2 Nature build the same shape in two sizes: the PRO
Series curved scissors at 10 inches, and the PRIME Series curved
scissors at 8 inches, which they describe as pocket-sized and aim at
beginner and intermediate scapers working in nano and pico tanks. Ten inches
of reach is for a tank deep enough that an 8-inch pair would have you with
your sleeve in the water. In a 30 cm cube it is more scissor than the
job needs.

The rest of the PRO range, for scale: splash scissors
8.5 inches, moss trimmers 6 inches, straight and flexed tweezers
10 inches each, glass scraper 26 inches with expandable
handles.

What Back 2 Nature do not publish, and we will not
invent.
The grade or alloy of the steel — “best grade
steel” is the whole of their claim, and there is no hardness figure,
no 420 or 304 designation, and no corrosion rating anywhere in their
literature. Nor a blade length as distinct from the overall length, nor a
weight, nor any statement about marine use. We have asked.

listing.

Setup & Use

What the curve is for. Back 2 Nature’s own description:
curved scissors for pruning aquatic plants in nature aquariums, where the
curved blades especially help in pruning stem plants with
minimum tissue damage. That is the specific job. A curved blade lets you keep
the handles level and outside the tank while the cutting edge follows the
contour of the plant mass, so you top a stand of rotala or ludwigia along a
line rather than in a series of flat steps — and, more to the point,
you cut cleanly through the stem in one pass instead of crushing it. A
crushed stem browns back below the cut and takes a fortnight to recover; a
clean one throws side shoots.

Cut, then get the trimmings out. Floating stem tips will
root wherever they land and rot wherever they lodge. Net them off the surface
before you turn the filter back on.

This is the pro-length pair, not the nano pair. Back 2
Nature position the PRO Series for intermediate and advanced aquascapers, and
this pair specifically as “best recommended for Pro Aquascapers”.
The 10-inch length is what makes it comfortable in a deeper tank; it is
correspondingly less comfortable in a shallow one, where their 8-inch PRIME
pair is the tool they themselves recommend instead.

Curved is not the only shape, and not always the right
one.
Back 2 Nature’s own range separates the jobs: curved scissors
for stem plants, double-wave splash scissors for stem and carpeting
plants depending on how you hold them, and short 6-inch moss trimmers for
mosses and fissidens. If you are trimming a carpet flat or shaping moss on
wood, this is not the pair for it, and they say so.

What Back 2 Nature do not publish, and we will not make
up.
Any care or maintenance instruction — there is no rinsing,
drying, oiling or sharpening guidance on their product page, in their
catalogue, or anywhere else on their site. Steel tools that go in water want
looking after, but any routine we printed here would be ours and not the
manufacturer’s, so we have left it out and asked them for one.

Everything above is from Back 2 Nature’s own product literature and
their description of the PRO and PRIME series.

What’s in the Box

One pair of scissors. Back 2 Nature sell the Pro Series
Curved Scissors as a single tool in a printed hanging pack, and their own
listing describes it as a 1-pack. There is no second tool, no set and no
combo in this SKU — Back 2 Nature do sell tool combinations, but each
of those carries its own separate article number, so a pack that contains two
tools is a different product from this one.

Not included: tweezers, a sand spade, a glass scraper, a
storage roll or case, and any cleaning or lubricating consumable. Back 2
Nature list every one of those as its own product where they make it
at all.

What they do not state. Whether a blade sheath, a
protective sleeve or a printed instruction card travels inside the pack.
Their catalogue photographs show the tool in a clear printed sleeve with a
hanging tab, but they publish no packing list, so we are not going to
describe the contents of a carton we have not opened. If it matters for a
gift, ask us and we will look at a pack before it ships.
