Chemi-Pure Elite adds ferric oxide to the original Chemi-Pure formula to also remove phosphates and silicates, making it the only complete choice for filtering any kind of aquarium. With Chemi-pure Elite, we have taken the next step in keeping Chemi-pure the ultimate and complete choice for filtering your aquarium. Chemi-pure is the latest in aquarium science.

Get all the benefits of Chemi-pure now with the added benefit of being able to remove all your phosphate and silicates. NO need for bulk Iron Oxide removers or spending additional money on a phosphate reactor. Chemi-pure Elite keeps making your aquarium maintenance easier. Chemi-pure Elite was designed and manufactured with the latest technologies available. Chemi-pure Elite is without a doubt the best all around filter media for all types of aquatic environments. Chemi-pure Elite is very economical, simple to use, and provides problem-free filter operation.

Part of managing nitrate and phosphate levels — see our guide to Nitrate & Phosphate for why these two parameters are tracked together.

Dosage & Directions

Keep it sealed and wet until you use it. That is the manufacturer's first instruction and it is easy to miss. Chemi-pure Elite ships sealed in its container for a reason; do not open a spare pack and leave it on a shelf.

Rinse the bag under running water for 5 to 10 seconds. Just until it runs clear. That is all — you are washing off carbon dust, not soaking the media.

Put it in a high-flow area. A sump, a canister filter or a hang-on-back filter, wherever the water actually moves. Chemi-pure Elite is chemical media in a nylon bag; water has to pass through it, not round it.

Replace it every 2 to 4 months, depending on your bio-load. That is the manufacturer's stated interval, and it is worth noting that their own marketing line — ‘lasts up to 4 months’ — is the top of that range and not the typical figure. A heavily fed tank will exhaust it sooner.

If you run more than one bag, stagger them. This is the most useful instruction on the pack and almost nobody follows it: change one bag at a time, a week apart, until all of them have been replaced. Swapping every bag on the same day strips the tank's chemical filtration to zero and back to full in one step, and that is the kind of swing that shows up in corals.

Which size for which tank — the manufacturer's own table:

3.1 oz (Mini Elite) — 0 to 10 gallons, about 38 litres
6.5 oz — 10 to 25 gallons, about 38 to 95 litres
11.74 oz — 25 to 50 gallons, about 95 to 190 litres
46.96 oz (Grande) — 175 to 200 gallons, about 660 to 760 litres

Between 50 and 175 gallons there is no single bag — you run two or more of the 11.74 oz bags, which is exactly the situation the stagger instruction above is written for.

What is actually in the bag. Chemi-pure Elite is the original Chemi-pure formula — carbon and ion-exchange resin — with GFO, granular ferric oxide, added to pull phosphate and silicate out as well. The carbon is their QuickWash Carbon, which is why the rinse is seconds rather than minutes. The practical consequence is that this one bag replaces a separate phosphate reactor for many tanks.

Two things to watch, from us rather than from the manufacturer. GFO pulls phosphate down, and on a reef running very low nutrients it can pull it down further than you want — test phosphate rather than assuming. And chemical media removes medication as readily as it removes anything else, so take the bag out before any treatment course and put a fresh one in afterwards.

Pack Size

Four sizes, and the size you pick is set by your tank volume:

3.1 oz — about 88 g. The Mini. Treats up to 10 gallons (38 litres): nano tanks, small all-in-ones, quarantine tanks.
6.5 oz — about 184 g. Treats 10 to 25 gallons (38–95 litres).
11.74 oz — about 333 g. Treats 25 to 50 gallons (95–190 litres). The size most Indian reef tanks want, and the one to buy in multiples for anything larger.
46.96 oz — about 1.33 kg. The Grande. Treats 175 to 200 gallons (660–760 litres).

Each size is a pre-filled nylon filter bag, not loose media. There is nothing to weigh out and nothing to decant; the bag goes into the filter as it comes.

Working out the running cost. Whichever size you buy, it is replaced every 2 to 4 months, so a tank consumes three to six of them a year. On a tank between 50 and 175 gallons you are running two or more 11.74 oz bags at once and staggering the changes, which doubles that. It is worth doing that sum before you commit to Chemi-pure as your chemical filtration rather than after.

Bulk packs exist. The manufacturer supply six-packs of both the 6.5 oz and the 11.74 oz bags. If you are running a large system or several tanks, ask us — a six-pack is a year of media for one tank.
