Chemi-pure Green combines the highest grade of low dust pelletized activated carbon with premium ion exchange resins to produce a balanced formula optimized for the health and well-being of your plants while delivering crystal clear water. The proprietary formula significantly reduces tannins, odors, toxins, organic compounds and medications. Chemi-pure Green’s high-capacity pelletized activated carbon has very low ash content and rinses clear quickly. The finest laboratory grade resins are incorporated to rapidly remove organics and tannins from your aquarium water while helping to stabilize pH and maintain macronutrient levels. Chemi-pure Green’s unique formula is the finest planted aquarium filtration media available. For a healthy, stable, crystal clear planted aquarium use Chemi-pure Green!

Compatibility

This is the freshwater planted one. Boyd build the
Chemi-pure range as three different formulations for three different tanks,
and the differences are real rather than cosmetic: the original Chemi-pure is
the general fresh-and-saltwater unit, Chemi-pure Blue is built for reef,
marine, jellyfish and high-pH freshwater systems, and Chemi-pure Green
is formulated specifically for freshwater planted aquariums
. Buying
across that line is the one mistake worth avoiding here.

Why a planted tank needs its own version. Ordinary
activated carbon does not distinguish between the organics you want gone and
the fertiliser you paid for. Boyd’s claim for Green is that it
does not strip the aquarium of micro or macro nutrients while
still pulling out tannins, odours, toxins and organic compounds, and that it
helps stabilise pH and maintain macronutrient levels. That claim is theirs,
and it is the entire reason this product exists as a separate formulation.

It removes medications: plan around that. Boyd list
medications among the things Green’s formula significantly reduces. Take the
unit out before you dose a treatment into the tank, and fit a fresh one once
the course is finished and you want the residue gone. Running both at once
means the medium wins.

It also takes out tannins, which is worth a thought before
you fit it if the tank’s look depends on them: a blackwater or botanical
aquascape is built on the tannins this is designed to remove. In a tank where
driftwood has stained the water and you want it clear, that is exactly what
you want; in one where the tint is the point, it is not.

Shrimp and CO2: what Boyd say, and what follows from it. Boyd make one relevant claim and no others: that Chemi-pure Green does not strip micro or macro nutrients. They publish no shrimp or invertebrate statement and nothing at all about CO2. The reasoning below is ours, from what the media is, and is not a Boyd position.

  • On shrimp. The working parts are pelletised activated carbon and ion-exchange resin. Neither is toxic to shrimp, and carbon is routinely run in shrimp tanks. The real risk with any fresh chemical media in a shrimp system is not the media itself but the speed of the change it makes. A tank that goes from tannin-stained to clear in a day has had its water chemistry moved quickly, and shrimp object to the rate of change more than to any particular value. Fit it, watch TDS and pH across the first week, and do not pair it with a large water change on the same day.
  • On CO2. Activated carbon adsorbs dissolved organics, not dissolved gases, so it will not pull CO2 out of the water column and a pressurised system does not need its bubble rate changed on account of this media. What can change is flow: a full media bag adds resistance in a canister, and if your CO2 is diffused inline or your drop checker sits in the filter return, less flow means less distribution. Read the drop checker a day after fitting rather than assuming nothing moved.
  • On fertilisers. Boyd’s nutrient claim is general and unquantified, and we cannot make it more specific than they have. Chelated iron is the one planted keepers ask about most, and Boyd do not address it. If you dose a full EI or similar schedule and want certainty rather than reasoning, ask us and we will put the question to the distributor.

Dosage & Directions

Match a unit to your tank’s volume. Boyd rate the
5 oz at 35 to 50 US gallons (about 130 to
190 litres) and the 11 oz at 75 to 100
US gallons (about 285 to 380 litres). Pick the size on this
page.

Being straight with you about the source: Boyd print a
Directions paragraph on their Chemi-pure and Chemi-pure Blue pages and
not on the Chemi-pure Green page. What follows is from their FAQ,
whose answers are written for “Chemi-pure / Chemi-pure Elite, Blue, or Green”
together. So it covers this product by name. Where a Green-specific
instruction would differ, we have no way to know, and we have not invented
one.

Rinse it first, and know what “rinsed” looks like. Boyd’s
method: hold the unit under running water and gently work the bag until the
water starts to run clear. On their QuickWash carbon that takes
5 to 10 seconds; on their older carbon products it can take
up to five minutes. Some carbon residue will still come off in the tank
afterwards and the water may go briefly cloudy. Boyd say this is normal
and harmless, and it clears on its own.

Where it goes. Into a high-flow area of
your sump, canister filter or hang-on-back (Boyd’s words) and as
the last stage of the filtration path, after the mechanical
media. Their FAQ is specific that it works anywhere with maximum exposure and
good water flow pushed into and around the unit, including underneath a
bio-ball trickle filter, and equally specific about the one place it must not
go: never put the unit inside a filter sock. A sock wraps it
in the debris it is meant to sit downstream of and starves it of the flow it
needs.

Replace every 2 to 4 months, depending on bio-load. Boyd
define normal use as a moderately stocked aquarium with adequate to highly
efficient filtration, and give one practical trigger: if the water starts to
go cloudy, change it then rather than waiting for the calendar.

If you run more than one unit, stagger them. Boyd’s
instruction is to change one bag at a time, a week apart, until all of them
have been replaced. Swapping every unit on the same day takes the tank’s
entire chemical filtration capacity from full to zero in an afternoon, and on
a heavily stocked system that shows.

Do not open the bag. Boyd are direct about this: they do
not recommend opening any Chemi-pure unit, and specifically warn against
buying a large one and splitting it between small tanks. The components are
combined in fixed ratios, and dividing them destroys the ratio. Their
words are that the effectiveness will be greatly diminished. If you need to
top a system up to a particular volume, the answer is another whole unit, not
half of a big one.

A word about the gallon ratings. Boyd’s own FAQ says the
recommendation is based on your aquarium’s total water volume, and then lists
everything that makes that number a starting point rather than an answer: how
much of the volume is displaced by rock, gravel and hardscape; whether the
tank is lightly or heavily stocked; how much you feed and how much waste that
produces; and how efficient your filtration already is. Two tanks of the same
litres can need different amounts of media. Read the rating as the ceiling for
a well-run tank and step up a size if yours is heavily stocked.

Pack Size

  • 5 oz: approximately 142 g of media in a
nylon filter bag. Boyd rate it for 35 to 50 US gallons,
about 130 to 190 litres. Boyd SKU CPGN 05.
  • 11 oz: approximately 312 g. Rated for
75 to 100 US gallons, about 285 to 380 litres. Boyd
    SKU CPGN 11.

Choose the size from the option on this page. Each unit is a sealed bag in
its own container; there is no filter holder, reactor or bracket in the
box.

Two units beat one big one cut in half. If your system
falls between sizes, add a second unit rather than opening one. Boyd
state plainly that the components are combined in fixed ratios and that
altering them greatly diminishes the effectiveness.

What Boyd do not publish for either size: the bag’s
dimensions, the net weight of media as against the label size, the carbon
pellet size and ash content (both of which they publish for the original
Chemi-pure and for Blue, but not for Green), and a shelf life for an unopened
container.
