The Salifert Copper Test Kit tracks copper levels, often introduced via medications and potentially lethal to marine fish and inverts.

Description

Often found in aquatic medications, copper can be lethal to marine fish and inverts, so keep and eye on copper levels with this Salifert Profi-Test Kit – Copper.

How to Use

Salifert’s procedure:

  1. Add 2 ml of water to the test vial, using the syringe supplied.
  2. Add 5 drops of the Cu reagent and swirl gently for 5 seconds.
  3. Let it stand for 10 minutes.
  4. Hold the vial in front of you, press the white part of the colour chart firmly against the side of the vial, and look through from the opposite side.

The 20-minute case. Some copper medications use strongly bound copper and need a 20 minute wait. Salifert’s advice when in doubt: read at 10 minutes and again at 20, and take the higher of the two. If you are treating with a chelated product, do this every time rather than occasionally.

Reading between the bars. A blue tinge lighter than the 0.1 ppm bar is approximately 0.05 ppm. A colour between two bars means a value between them.

What this kit can and cannot see. It measures dissolved or weakly chelated copper at a pH of 7.5 to 9. Strongly chelated copper will be only partly detected, or not detected at all. That matters more than anything else on this page: if you are dosing a chelated copper medication and this test reads low, the copper may still be there in full. Check what form of copper your treatment uses before you trust a low reading and dose more.

Two habits that make the readings repeatable: compare the colour in daylight or under a neutral white lamp rather than over the aquarium, where blue light shifts everything; and rinse the vial with RO water and shake it dry between tests, because reagent left in the vial is the single most common cause of a reading that will not reproduce.

Salifert’s cautions: keep out of the reach of children; for aquarium hobby use only, not for consumption. Salifert recommend protective gloves and eye protection. Read the leaflet in the box before the first test — it is the authoritative version, and it is what the colour chart is calibrated against.

Tests per Kit

Up to 50 tests on tap or aquarium water as a routine check, in Salifert’s own words. They also describe it as lasting for several copper cures — a copper treatment means testing daily or twice daily while the level is being brought up and held, so a single course eats a meaningful share of a kit.

If you are starting a copper treatment on a quarantine system, budget the kit against the whole course rather than against a monthly check, and have a second kit in hand before you begin. Running out mid-treatment leaves you dosing a toxic metal blind.

Not just for marine. Salifert state the kit can be used for marine, fresh and garden pond water. Testing tap water is worth doing on its own account — copper plumbing puts copper in the water, and it is a common reason a shrimp or invertebrate tank fails for no visible cause.

What’s in the Box

Salifert do not publish a packing list. What the procedure uses, all supplied in the kit:

  • A 2 ml syringe, for the sample
  • The test vial
  • The Cu reagent, dosed in drops
  • The colour chart — read through the side of the vial, not from above
  • The instruction leaflet

No measuring spoon: unlike Salifert’s powder-based kits, the copper test is drops only.
