MicMol Thor is a powerful, compact reef LED with smart controller integration, engineered for serious reef tank lighting.

Description

For the MicMol G4 THOR PRO.

The hanging kit is made with stainless steel wire rope, which keeps the hanging system strong and keeps the look of it clean.

Dimensions: Length: 60″ (150cm)

Setup & Use

What it is. A pendant kit in stainless steel wire rope,
which MicMol publish at 60 inches / 150 cm of rope,
for hanging a MicMol fixture from the ceiling instead of standing it on a
bracket. It replaces the mount, not the light: nothing about the fixture, its
controller or its power supply changes.

Fitting it, in MicMol’s own three steps. Their quick start
guide gives the sequence as: assemble the hanging kit; lock the light to the
hanging bracket; hang it from the ceiling. That is the whole of the published
procedure — the guide is drawn rather than written, and MicMol specify no
torque, no fixing type and no ceiling anchor. Which means the part of this job
that carries the load is the part you supply.

The ceiling fixing is yours to get right. Nothing in this
box goes into the ceiling. Whatever you use has to hold the fixture’s weight
continuously, in a warm and humid room, directly over a tank full of water and
livestock — so it wants a joist, a proper anchor rated well above the
load, or a purpose-made ceiling hook, not a plasterboard plug. If you are not
certain what is above the plaster, that is the moment to get someone who is.

What it fits. The MicMol G4 THOR PRO. MicMol
publish that fixture as a 63 × 3 W array, 450 × 105 × 35 mm, with a shipping weight of
4.5 kg, and a coverage range of 45 cm to 100 cm (18″ to 40″). MicMol publish no second weight figure for this model, and no weight at all for the kit itself. One thing to know before you order: MicMol’s accessories page describes the hanging kit as being “for the G4 THOR & X” and publishes the 150 cm rope length against that entry, while the THOR PRO’s own product page lists “Hanging Kits (optional)” among its accessories without giving a length. So the PRO kit is MicMol’s own option and this is the one they supply for it; whether its rope is the same 150 cm is not something they state, and we would rather tell you that than copy the number across. Ask us and we will measure the one in stock.

What MicMol do not publish, and we will not invent: a load
rating for the wire rope, a maximum fixture weight, and any statement that the
kit fits a fixture other than the one it is listed against. If you are hanging
something that is not the model named above, ask us first.

Getting it level and getting it square. A hanging fixture
shows every error a bracket would hide. Set both drops to the same length
before you lift it, hang it, then sight along the front glass of the tank and
adjust rather than trusting a tape measure to the ceiling — ceilings are
rarely as flat as they look. Centre it on the tank’s short axis before you
worry about height: a pendant hung off-centre puts a bright edge on one side
of the aquascape and a shadow on the other.

Then set the height, and change it slowly. Raising a
pendant does two things at once: it spreads the light over a wider footprint
and it drops the intensity at the substrate, and the second happens faster
than most people expect. MicMol publish a coverage range for each fixture
— see below — but they publish it as a range the model suits, not
as a function of how high you hang it, so treat height as something you dial in
and then verify, not something you can calculate from their table. Corals in
particular should be moved through changes in light over weeks, not in an
afternoon.

Cable management, which matters more on a pendant. The
power lead now runs from above, so MicMol’s own handling instruction applies
with force: mount the power supply where it cannot get wet, and leave a
drip loop — a dip in the cord below the level of the
socket — so that anything running down the cable drips onto the floor
instead of into the outlet. Never put the light or its controller in water,
never force a connector into a port, and if a plug or socket does get wet, do
not touch the cord.

Before maintenance, shut the light down and disconnect it
before you move it — a fixture hanging over an open tank on two wires is
easy to knock while your arms are in the water. Clean the outside with a damp,
soft, lint-free cloth only; no sprays, solvents or abrasives, and no moisture
into the openings.

What’s in the Box

We are going to be straight about this one: MicMol publish no
packing list for the hanging kits.
Their accessories page gives the
material and one dimension — stainless steel wire rope, 60 inches /
150 cm — and nothing else. Their quick start guide’s first step is
“assembly hanging kits”, which tells you it arrives in pieces, and then shows
the assembly as a drawing rather than a parts list. So:

  • One hanging kit for the fixture named on this page:
stainless steel wire rope with the bracket the light locks into.
  • We are not going to state a count of ropes, hooks, adjusters or
    screws
, because MicMol do not, and a packing list invented from a
photograph is worse than no packing list. If the exact contents decide your
order, ask us and we will open the one in stock and photograph it — that
takes five minutes and it is a real answer.

What is definitely not included:

  • The light. This is the mount alone.
  • Anything that goes into the ceiling — no anchors, no
plugs, no hooks, no toggle bolts. See Setup & Use above; that fixing is the
part carrying the load, and it depends on your ceiling, not on the kit.
  • Controller, power supply or cable. Those come with the
    fixture.
  • Any tool.
